What is the "Master Plan" and why does Maplewood need one?

It's defined in the Municipal Land Use Law, which is cited as NJSA 40:55D-1.

Every town has one and needs one. It's a document about zoning, land use planning, etc. etc. Zoning ordinances are based on the master plan. Ours was last revised in 1984. It has to be "reexamined" regularly to keep it current and legally "alive"... and we've done that several times in the last dozen years... but the planning board and the TC feel that enough time has passed since 1984 that it's necessary to redo it from scratch, a process that will take about a year.

For info about what they are and what they're for, go to http://www.njleg.state.nj.us

There is a selection on the left hand side, down a bit, under "Laws and Constitution". Select "Statutes". Go there, and type "40:55D-28" (in double quotes) in the search box to read the details of what goes in a master plan.

As the planning board starts the revision process, I expect you'll see a lot more information about this...
