Yes, thanks, I meant the BOE...

I guess I still have the Board of Adjustment (BOA) on my mind. I found out last week that I need to go back to them to reconsider my B&B case again regarding the abandonment issue...

What are you referring to? Do you think the parking has something to do with the B&B issue?

Well, not according to the neighbors and Vic. They all insisted it was all about Winchester Gardens. Trust me, I'll be revisiting the parking issue again as soon as I get past the B&B case.

oh no the parking has nothing to do with the B&B issue. Heavy laughter, tears in eyes.
Are the dog walkers still around? Does Vic have a dog? Just asking!

Didn't the dog walkers move? I thought WG like having the B and B near by? Good luck Art!

Thank you Taylor, the dog walkers did move, and yes, the folks at WG and hundreds of other local residents all want the B&B...

As for you Reflective, are you serious or what? Wipe your eyes pal! I guess you're not as informed as I once thought you were. Why sound foolish? Ask Vic for yourself, the parking ordinance the township committee passed was not about the B&B...

FWIW, I always and still do believe it did, but you can ask anyone who had a say in the matter. According to everyone else on the township committee, it was all about the employee's being picked up at Winchester Gardens.

My name is Helen. My husband, John, and I own Freeman’s Fish Market. During the course of our days, we get to meet the most interesting people who live right here in our wonderful towns. Really, you’d be amazed at the “meetings” that go on in our little market!

One of the terrific people that we’ve come to know is Dr. Jane Aaronson. Dr. Aaronson lives right here in Maplewood. I didn’t know this until recently, but anyone that has looked into adopting internationally has probably heard of Dr. Jane Aaronson. Her website is called: orphandoctor.com.

My soft spot just happens to be – orphans. So one day I decided to go to orphandoctor.com to see what was going on. Once there I “clicked” on the WWO (World Wide Orphan Foundation) link. What I found was truly worthy of some local publicity. (I would like to invite everyone to go there!)

First of all, the WWO is dedicated to serving orphans in orphanages in approximately 5-6 countries. Dr. Aaronson sends “rangers” or visits herself to assess the orphanages, determine the needs of the children and to start programs to benefit them. The WWO then raises money to help support the programs. The WWO also works with the child welfare agencies in the different countries and has been directly involved in child welfare reform.

Here are some examples of the programs: Bulgaria – “Granny Program” matches at-risk children with retirees in the community. Serbia – “Return to the Future” helps older orphans return to their place of birth and create personal family histories. China – WWO leading a team of occupational therapists to work in several orphanages. Viet Nam and Ethiopia – work with children who have been left orphaned by HIV infected parents or who are HIV infected themselves. (Please check out the Ethiopia story in particular – there’s a Mother Teresa-like thing going on there!)

In talking to Dr. Aaronson, the WWO is ever expanding and ever accepting additional funds. This year the WWO is holding its first “Gala” and it’s hoped that all of the proceeds will be going directly to the programs. The date of the Gala is November 1, 2005 (mark your calendars!) It will be held at a great place in NYC. There will be Broadway entertainment and some great international food. The Gala will also be honoring an individual noted for his or her involvement with orphans/orphanages. It should be a fantastic evening. The cost? $250 which is not expensive for this type of fundraiser (really – misc. fundraiser golf outings run around $500). Another program which Dr. Aaronson hopes to start up this year with some of the funds from the Gala is a pre-school initiative which would help stimulate pre-school age children in the orphanages the Foundation currently serves.

So, please go to orphandoctor.com and then click on the WWO link. From there you can view the different programs – and – sign up for the WWO NEWSLETTER!!

It’s a wonderful thing. Not only does the WWO benefit the children in the orphanages but the knowledge gained about adopting from specific countries helps anyone who is seeking to, or who has already adopted, internationally. I hope this note will get Dr. Aaronson and the Worldwide Orphan Foundation some well-deserved attention and publicity. Thanks for reading this far!! – Helen Harvey

Sorry - I didn't know what "thread" to put all this under... It's such a good thing I want everyone to know about it. Dr. Aaronson is also hoping to make Maplewood/South Orange the "base" for the WWO - really hoping that the WWO becomes an organization that's on the tips of everyone's tounges. You know - sort of like - Habitat! I'm hoping too!

Welcome to MOL Helen... You're in the right church, but I believe you may be in the wrong pew?

Thank you for sharing. This is interesting information and brings positive attention to another great American living in our community. Maybe Dave or Jamie will direct you to another area that will provide this story more exposure?

Thanks!! That's a great idea - I'm going to put it under "please help" too. If anyone has any other ideas - please let me know. My goal for this organization (and for this woman!) is to get a great turnout from this area at the "Gala". And - to put this organization on our little piece of the map! This type of stuff would be sooo great for Maplewood/SO to be known for!!

"If anyone has any other ideas - please let me know."

Yes, in the event anyone hasn't taken the time to look up her web site, or to click on her credits, I'm going to paste Dr. Aronson's information about herself. I am blown away by how much she has accomplished. She is one remakable human being, and we are so honored to have her living and working in Maplewood.

BTW, in trying to post this I got for the first time ever the following message:

Part I

About Dr. Aronson - CV

I am a board certified general pediatrician and pediatric infectious diseases specialist with a faculty appointment at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University as Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics. I recently participated as a co-principal investigator in a research project investigating Tuberculosis and other infectious diseases in children adopted from abroad through the TB Elimination Division of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and the research findings will be published in Pediatrics in the near future.

I have been working as an international adoption medicine specialist for the past eight years. 300 newly adopted children from abroad are evaluated in my office each year and many of these children are followed long-term as part of my primary care pediatric practice. I have seen about 1400 children adopted from abroad in my office in the last few years.

I am part of a national network of adoption medicine specialists who have recently become an official section of the American Academy of Pediatrics called the Provisional Section on Adoption; this group organizes workshops for adoption professionals all over the country. I speak and write about international adoption for family adoption groups, adoption agencies, and physicians. As part of my work as an adoption medicine specialist, I review pre-adoption medical reports and evaluate videos and photographs. I also prepare people for travel abroad and am available for consultations by phone when families are traveling to complete an adoption.

As the Founder and Executive Medical Director of Worldwide Orphans Foundation, a 501 (c ) 3, which sponsors research and education in orphanages abroad, I travel to many orphanages in Eastern Europe, Russia, Asia, and Latin America. The mission of the foundation is to learn about orphanage health issues and plan strategies to improve orphanage conditions. The foundation sends students and healthcare professionals as participants in the Orphan Ranger Program to live and work in orphanages to form liaisons with orphanage educators, staff, and doctors in an attempt to improve living conditions for orphans.

In the summer 2000, I opened the International Pediatric Health Services, PLLC at 151 East 62nd Street in Manhattan to continue my work as an adoption medicine specialist, pediatrician, and infectious diseases specialist.

I have always loved the inner spirit of the child. I look to the child in myself and my experiences as a child to guide my work with families. As a teacher for ten years prior to becoming a pediatrician and now as an adoptive parent I feel close to children and this passion for them is in every aspect of my work as a pediatrician.

"HERE WE GO AGAIN"

This past Sunday night after the last performance of SWEET SUE, at the Burgdorff Cultural Center, the "What Exit? Theatre Co." arranged a party for playwright A.R. Gurney, Jr at Here's 2 the Arts. The party was a lot of fun and apparently someone called the N.Y.Times about the great success of the play, the What Exit? Theatre, and how they had the playwright as a guest at the play for the first time since it opened on Broadway over 10 years ago.

Yesterday, we received a phone call from a New York Times reporter requesting information regarding our Cafe and it's relationship to the town's local theatrical groups and local performers. The reporter asked if she could bring a photographer to the Cafe to do a story about our town and how we have attracted so much talent in such a small community.

The reporter will be visiting the cafe this Friday, April 29 at 8:00PM. This is a great opportunity to not only promote H2TA but also all of the local talents. For instance, the reporter was impressed that the headline group for Friday is made up of two single performers that have appeared on a variety of OPEN MIC NIGHTS. After several performance it was suggested that they perform together, Friday will be their premier night as a duo. I believe everyone in attendance will be highly impressed by "Joe & Chuck".

We were told this story will be published in an article in the New York Times on May 22nd. In addition, the article will highlight the uniqueness of H2TA's participation with various local restaurants, artists, civic groups, and performers of all aspects of the Arts, as well as our own Chef Scott's "Ultimate Cheesecake" and other dessert delights.

If at all possible, we would appreciate anyone involved in any aspect of the performing, dramatic, or visual Arts to come down this Friday night and contribute to the article in anyway they can. This is another great opportunity to keep our great community in the news... Thank you.

How did it go? Have they published an article (yet)?

Your cafe is starting to be part of something big. You're doing a very good thing.

Thanks Tom, we're working hard at it.

The cafe is starting to become a part of the community. This month we are very excited about hosting a three day Strollers event at the Cafe. More details to come...

Meanwhile, the N.Y. Times reporter said she was sorry about last week and plans on coming in tomorrow night. They said they will feature the article on Sunday, May 22, 2005.
