Thought all of you who took the train would want to know there is no MidTown Direct this morning. All trains are being diverted to Hoboken. Something about frozen power lines.

Delays of at least one hour!!!

The 6:05am MDT train was about ten minutes late into Maplewood and arrived at Hoboken at 6:55am.

7:05 came in right on time and went to Hoboken. Other than the diversion, no real delays

The one hour delay did not apply to the Morris/Essex trains. Our trains all went to Hoboken and experienced relatively minor delays. Midtown direct service was restored by 11:00 AM.

Got a NJT allert at 6:38 PM this evening. More delays out of Penn Station, NY due to Amtrak overhead wire problems. These problems will continue as long as we are dependant upon the ability of Amtrak to maintain its overhead wire, tracks, switches, signals etc. and they do such a poor job of it.

Service through Hoboken which is under NJT control is so much more dependable.

Joan:

A thought that we all may be missing. Amtrak, under david Gunn has done a good job for the past two years financially. But is now running into serious trouble from Congress and the Administration for Dollars. If Amtrak is adopting a benign neglect to regional lines and focussing on its northeast corridor profitable service, it is probably deliberate and intended to get the attention of representatives and senators in Congress.

Last, if Midtown Direct becomes unreliable or discontinued, watch housing values plummet.

Reflective:

All the more reason to apply whatever pressure we can political or otherwise to get Amtrak to maintain its infrastructure between Newark and New York. Lobbying NJT to make these improvements won't be effective because they do not fall within NJT's area of responsibility.
