Has anyone heard of the Maplewood Fire Reserves? Are they still active? What do they do? What kind of training do they receive? Are they all EMTs? Who can join? Any other info would be appreciated . . . |

I just called the Maplewood Fire Department at 973-762-6500 to ask if they still had the Maplewood Fire Reserves and they still do. If you call the above (ex 4107) then ask for LT Kling; he can answer all your questions. |

I reached out to LT Kling a few times last week without success (he may be away on leave). Does anyone else have any information about the Maplewood Fire Reserves? Thanks. |

Why not call the main fire house and ask there? |

I reached Lt. Kling this morning at the number above. He was very helpful and confirmed they are looking for new members. |

Shaun: Did Lt. Kling provide any answers to Daniel's questions regarding training, duties and qualification requirements for members of the Fire Reserves? If so, could you please post that information here? |

Last night I stopped by the firehouse at Boyden & Springfield and picked up the one-page application from Lt. Kling, who is the Fire Dept. liason. There is a separate chain of command for the reserves, including chief, captain, lieutenant. Training is provided, there are drills once per month (on a Tuesday night if memory serves). Unfortunately, did not have time for much more discussion. I believe Lt. Kling is back on duty on Sunday if Daniel or anyone else is interested. |

Shaun: Thank you for the information. I left a message for LT Kling on friday and I am hoping for a call back sometime this week. If you end up speaking with any of the Reserve's officers and can put me in contact with them, that would be great too. Also, did you learn anything about the medical standards for reservists? Thanks. - Daniel |

I do not believe having an EMT certification is a pre-requisite. The application does mention passing a physical exam. I will be submitting my application this week, will let you know if I receive any additional info. |

Dan- He won't be calling today as he's off. I don't know if you are aware they work shifts 24 hours on 72 hours off. I'd check back Thursday. I did ask the young man who answered the phone if it was possible for the Lt to visit this thread on MOL. |

Shuan: I finally got to speak with LT Kling. It turned out that the voice mail system over there was not working properly. In any case, he was both very encouraging and very helpful. He is going to send me an application this week. If you attend a drill, let me know how it goes . . . |

Unfortunately, it is likely a moot point for me now. Last year I volunteered for the Police Reserves and had not heard anything for quite some time after passing my background check last summer. After mostly giving up hope, I got the call late last week. Training started this past Tuesday night at the Essex County Police Academy. Maybe I should start a blog... |

LOL - Just The Aunt, you were spot on!! I received a letter yesterday from John Russell (Chief of the Fire Reserves) outlining the meeting dates for the rest of 2005. Daniel, did you receive one as well? |
