Don't live in Maplewood, but knew you'd want to see this.

Livingston to appoint new township manager
Meade, now Maplewood administrator, will take over the post in July

BY KATIE WANG
Star-Ledger Staff
The township of Livingston plans to appoint Michele Meade, the township administrator in Maplewood, as its new township manager at a special meeting Monday.

Meade will be the third township manager since Livingston switched to its manager form of government in 1957. She will take over in July for retiring manager Charles J. Tahaney, who has served as manager since 1985.

"She's extremely qualified, and we're honored to have her," said Livingston Mayor David B. Katz. "We're elated."

Glenn Turtletaub, the township clerk, said Meade's salary will not be disclosed until she is formally appointed Monday.

Katz said the township received 40 applications during its six- month search. It whittled the number of applicants down to five, giving them a series of essay questions to answer.

At the end, Meade emerged as the most qualified candidate.

"I'm very excited," said Meade. "I'm looking forward to getting to get to know the Livingston community and helping them achieve their new projects."

As manager, Meade, 39, will be expected to direct the construction of a new town hall and police department. The new addition to the Ruth L. Lockwood Library and the Livingston Town Center project are also underway.

The Livingston Town Center project is a new retail complex at the corner of South Livingston and Mount Pleasant avenues. Township officials hope the project, to be completed later this year, will serve as a focal point for residents to gather.

Meade joined Maplewood in 1999 as its administrator. In that role, she oversaw the budget and supervised the township's 310 employees.

"Michele is an extremely intelligent, extremely knowledgeable professional administrator, and her contributions to Maplewood have been enormous," said Maplewood Mayor Fred Profeta. "Much of it is behind the scenes, where the average citizen might not know them. But we on the township committee certainly appreciate her excellence."

Before coming to Maplewood, she was the assistant and acting administrator of Freehold Township and the assistant to the administrator of New Brunswick.

She is a former president of the New Jersey Municipal Management Association.

She is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University.

The special meeting is scheduled to take place at 8 p.m. Monday, followed by a brief reception at Livingston Town Hall.

Good luck to her in Irvington. She didn't seem to enjoy her work here from my few, brief, somewhat abrupt interactions with her. I hope she finds the new challenge rejuvinating.

Duncan, I think you meant Livingston, or is there something I'm missing?

After the Vic, Jerry era was replaced by Fred and crew, she saw the handwriting. Livingston, good luck!
Duncan is on track with his comments.

This is a healthy change for all.

I second the fact that Ms. Meade was "not a happy camper" - ever!
