Bobk: Maryland may have a law allowing any town to "phase-in" a reval, but that is beside the point. New Jersey does not have a law that would have allowed Maplewood to "phase-in" the effects of a revaluation. When some people sued to keep the old valuations, the judge concluded that using the revaluation was more fair (yes, more fair) than using the old valuations. Some people wanted the old valuations to stay in place, but that would not have been fair. A revaluation should have been done long (and I mean loooooooong) before Mr. DeLuca was the mayor. It was not, so he had the "luck" to bear the brunt of the grief that always accompanies a revaluation. Why else do you think politicians put them off as long as possible? But, we all know (if we are honest with ourselves) that putting it off even longer would have made the shock even worse, when it finally did happen. And every year that a revaluation was not done, would be another year that many families (okay, about half the town) would be paying more than their fair share. A revaluation is a "no win" for any politician. There really is no one to blame, when property values change. Nevertheless, there are a lot of people who want to blame someone, and Mr. DeLuca is the person they've decided to blame (for something that really wasn't his fault). |

If you really want it to be about the reval, then that's the way the cookie crumbles. But a lot of people also think that Vic is a crooked shooter...go check out the Citizen Action Bait and Switch thread in Soapbox. |

Nohero, As Monty Python put it in their Dead Bishop on the Landing sketch, "society's to blame"... "Right, we'll arrest them." |

Nohero, for the record I don't have a problem with the reval being done, only the methodology used and to a degree the timing since houses in the areas where taxes generally went down or stayed neutral were revalued before the summer sales were posted by the county. What ever the faults of the 1982 reval the COD didn't get above 15 until the year before Vic ordered the reval. For the record, the 2004 CD was nearly 15, less than five years after we spent well over a quarter million for the "flawed" reval we had. A system such as Maryland's would go a long way towards eliminating the political issues in doing reassessments. I believe they do them every few years and ultimately this is fairer than the way things are done in NJ. |

Thinking about Nohero's post I gotta say I don't like this blame game he's trying to pull. What he's saying is that Mayors from year's past such as Jerry Ryan dropped the ball and Vic paid as a result. I'm going to lecture Nohero and all the left wing Vic fans, so listen up. Jerry Ryan was a TC member and Mayor for years, 11 total I believe, maybe more. He eventually lost because Vic and the left wing radicals who support Vic muscled in and made clear to Jerry he should either join them or lose. Jerry obviously made the wrong decision. If Jerry had teamed with Fred instead, he'd still be a TC member, as opposed to Pettis or Kathy. And you know what, that's to bad. Jerry took alot of heat the last time out and I was one of the leading voices giving him grief. I want to tell Jerry I regret some of the things said, and some of the things I said. Since that election you have handled your defeat with dignity. I want you to know I respect you a great deal as a result. I would also like to see you throw your hat back into the ring, possibly as a Fred Democrat down the road. I think your knowledge and experience is quite valuable. As far as Nohero's little quip above, screw it. Ignore it and ignore the source. Vic's people will do and say anything. Nohero should know better.

Straw, and anyone else upset about revals, taxes or "Vic's People". You are imbeciles. We live in NJ, not maryland. This is the second richest state in the union. Essex county is in the top 10 richest counties in the entire country. You have nice houses. You have beautiful parks. Crosswalks lined with red brick. an army of crossing guards ushering your children to the saftey of well preened sidewalks after school. A police department deeply concerned with the heathens destroying Fred's signs. You live in such a quaint suburb that you have the time to patrol your neighborhood for Deluca guerillas engaged in subversive activity. This stuff has to be paid for man. Are you Serious? Some peoples taxes went up 50%, thats not fair. Why did their taxes go up 50%? because the idiots on TC blocked a reval for 20 years. But all of this aside, your talking about lawn signs here. LAWN SIGNS Good god. |

Perhaps you think we should be paying less taxes? How in the name of all that is holy do you propose we do that? Is you house not worth what is was valuated at? If that is the case, whatever you think it's worth I will buy it and you can move somewhere with less taxes. For the record, my taxes almost doubled. |

"For the record, my taxes almost doubled." Well for the record if this isn't an issue for you (more taxes), there's no reason to vote for Vic since he supports a Constitutional Convention or a special legislative session solely dedicated to tax reform.

Tax reform is important so this kind of thing doesnt happend again you moron. I have enough sense to know that I should be paying my fair share. People were getting screwed paying 10,000 for a house on Rynda Road, while people on my sde of town were paying 6,7, or 8 thousand. Get your head out of your a**. |

Another sign destroyed. It is so horrible to see an innocent sign ripped from its metal frame and thrown on the lawn. The agony of it brought tears to my eyes. This one lost its life on Ridgewood near Baker. It is so sad when a sign dies. |
