I seem to recall some discussion last year that a traffic light was to be installed at Oakview and Valley. Anyone know anything about this?

This also came up in another thread. I'll try to find it for you, but I'm pretty sure it's a done deal. Although I don't know the timing.

I can't find the thread but I know that it said late 1994 or early 1995. I hope that this won't be another "coming soon" that never comes. (But this is Maplewood, not SO.)

I am probably guilty of spreading the rumor here, but it's because I read of it here. I believe it is scheduled for fall of 2005, so they're not late yet.

I don't know where I got 1994 and 1995 above. I meant 2004 and 2005. Boy am I in a time warp today!

I heard that the traffic light at Oakview and Valley was listed in the preliminary capital budget for 2005. However, the final budget hasn't been approved yet.

It was brought up at the last town meeting and they said it will be installed within the next 3 months

When are we gonna get one at Jefferson and Maplewood Ave .?. If I was a betting man, I'd say this intersection has had more accidents then Oakview and Valley.

Uke,

I think the primary motivation for improving Oakview and Valley is pedestrian traffic. It's a major crossing for people walking to the train station, the park and the village.

Reflective:

My husband has been lobbying for a traffic light at that corner for many years (as have others with far more political influence in this town that either he or I) but neither he nor I were a part of the decision making process which lead to the final decision to place a traffic light at that corner.

As the Chairperson for the 2004-2005 Citizens Budget Advisory Committee, I can tell you that the funding for this light is in the current draft budget being discussed.

That said, a lot of things are currently in the draft budget, and a lot of expense has to be removed. Nothing is sure at this time except for increases in employee benifits and insurance payments.

George:

Considering that matching funds have already been approved, isn't this project more likely to approved than some of the others in the capital budget?

Likely, however, I do not made decisions, only the elected few.

THIS IS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF TAX MONEY I HAVE SEEN IN A WHILE IN A TOWN THAT LOVES TO PISS AWAY MONEY ON UN NEEDED CRAP LIKE THIS TRAFFIC LIGHT. THE LOGIC OF THREE TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN A THREE BLOCK STRETCH OF ROAD IS QUESTIONABLE AT BEST. IF YUPPIES TRYING TO CATCH A TRAIN OR DRAGGING THEIR ASSES HOME AT NIGHT CANT LOOK BOTH WAYS BEFORE CROSSING THE STREET THEN THEY DESERVE TO HIT BY TRAFFIC (DARWINISM ANYONE). NOW ALL OF THE CUT-THROUGH TRAFFIC IS GOING TO USE PROSPECT OR RIDGEWOOD/WYOMING CREATING TRAFFIC PROBLEMS ON THOSE ROADS. THIS TOWNS ROADS ARE LITTERED WITH POT HOLES. IF WE ARE SPENDING MONEY ON ROADS THEN LETS FIX OUR STREETS INSTEAD OF INSTALLING USELESS TRAFFIC LIGHTS. "But they got matching funds" some one is bound to whine. WHO CARES WE STILL HAD TO SPEND SOMETHING, EVEN IF IT WERE FREE DOSENT CHANGE THE FACT THAT IT IS A BAD IDEA. STOP WASTING OUR TAX MONEY AND CREATING HEADACHES AT THE SAME TIME. TOWN COUNCIL REALLY HORRIBLE ON THIS ONE WHERE IS THE LEADERSHIP??????????????

I don't know, Reflective. Your post sounds like creeping political paranoia. Altho we know that sort of online tactic was used in the last election, don't we? The one you're responding to, on the other hand seems to me more like a fiscal and social conservative rant. Neither is very pleasant or healthy, imo.

Let's give daddybigs the benefit of the doubt for a moment. Maybe the yuppies really do deserve to die on the street. Oh, and the kids, too. Lots of kids cross there.
