Please join us on May 30, 2005 when the Township of Maplewood celebrates Memorial Day with a parade followed by a ceremony at Town Hall.

Participants in the parade should assemble at the Columbia High School Student Parking Lot at 8:30 AM. The parade starts at 9 AM and proceeds along West Parker Avenue to Maplewood Avenue, along Maplewood Avenue to Baker Street, along Baker Street to Valley Street, and along Valley Street to Town Hall. The parade will be followed immediately by a memorial ceremony held in front of Town Hall.

FAQs follow in separate posts.

Youth groups such as scout troops, Y groups, dance schools, athletic teams, student bands, junior docents, junior volunteers, etc.

Adult groups such as service organizations, civic organizations, chambers of commerce, community organizations, block associations, church groups, etc.

My group wants to march in the parade. What should I do?

Contact me with the name of your group, a contact person and phone number (in case we have reach you), and approximate number of marchers.

Your group need not have marched before to be welcome in the parade but groups which have marched previously should let me know you are coming again this year.

You can contact me by posting the above requested information on this thread, sending me a private line, or phoning me (the number is listed).

All such phone calls and e-mails will be confirmed shortly after their receipt.

I am a veteran and I would like to participate in the parade. What should I do?

Veterans may participate as individuals or as members of the honor guard.

If you would like to be in the honor guard please contact me as soon as possible (using any method in the immediate prior post) and I will pass your name and phone number to the honor guard coordinator who will get back to you with details.

If you would like to march, but not in the honor guard, please get back to me with your name so we will know to expect you.

If you would like to be in the parade but are not able to march, get back to me as soon as possible and I will try to arrange transport in a vehicle for you.

I would like to help out with the parade. What kind of volunteer needs do you have?

If you want to help with the parade, you could help by:

calling organizations to confirm their participation this year

designing and distributing fliers advertising the parade

offering to drive veterans who would like to participate but can no longer march

telling your friends and neighbors about the parade

helping out on parade day by passing out flags to the children and/or starting the parade

turning out to watch the parade and then staying for the memorial ceremony.

Where is the best place to watch the parade?

Any place along the parade route is fine. The most popular viewing places are in the village and by Town Hall.

If you plan to watch anywhere other than Town Hall, please try to make it to Town Hall as soon after the parade passes your location as possible so you can attend the memorial ceremony which follows.

It was originally named that as a reminder to people that it was long past time to remove their Christmas Decorations.

A lawsuit by the ACLU forced the United States to change the name of the holiday on the basis that Christmas is a Christian holiday, and people of other faiths would have no way of remembering to take down their Hannukah, Kwanza or Ramadan decorations. Or Samhain. The new name of "Memorial" Day serves to jog peoples' memories that's it's time to take down the fading plastic garland and 12-ft menorah from the front lawn.

Ed:

Thanks for notifying me that SOMBI will not be marching this year because so many of its members are active in other organizations which will be marching.

I look forward to seeing you at the parade.

The Y Explorers has been added to the list of groups marching in this year's Memorial Day parade.

If you are one of the more than 600 veterans living in Maplewood (or a veteran from any of our neighboring communities) and you would like to march in the Memorial Day Parade, please come to the Student Parking Lot on West Parker Avenue by 8:30 AM on Memorial Day.

Reminder:

If you are a member of a youth group, service organization, civic organization, chamber of commerce, community organization, block association, church group, etc. and your group would like to march in the Memorial Day Parade, please send me a PL with the name of your group and the name and contact information for a liaison we can contact on parade day in the event poor weather forces us to cancel the parade.

Sounds good to me. I spoke with Jamie about a week ago and he was in favor of putting an MOL group together (I think he was being serious. It was on comedy night but the show hadn't started yet.)

Jamie would be the one to speak with about setting this up. Just ask him to reconfirm with me and MOL will be added to the list of groups marching.

You should know that a great many MOL regular posters are already participating in the parade, marching with one of the organizations that plan to be in the parade. I don't know how persons would be available to march under the MOL banner.

Question asked in the Village yesterday:

May my son's school (Boyden) get a group together and march in the parade?

Yes. I already have Boyden School penciled in. Just get back to me with a confirmation and give me contact information in case of bad weather.

The same holds for the other elementary schools in town. For years the Tuscan School Kazoo Band was one of the highlights of the parade. Nothing this formal is required but you should have some kind of sign or banner identifying your group to persons along the parade route.

The following groups which marched last year still haven't confirmed whether they will be marching in this year's parade. If you are active in one or more of these organizations and can respond on the organization's behalf, please send me a PL or post the information here so I will know whether to expect your group this year. Here is the list:

4th of July Committee
St. George’s Church
Hilton Neighborhood Association
Springfield Avenue Partnership
Maplewood Lacrosse Club
Pack 3 BSA
Troop 5 BSA
Troop 10 BSA
Troop 60 BSA

If you cannot speak on behalf of one of these organizations but know someone who can, please either ask them to get back to me or contact me here or by private line with contact information for the organization.

Thanks.

Errata:

Response to Just the Aunt should have read, "I don't know how MANY posters would be available to march under the MOL banner."

Joan
phone calls to the BSA leaders will get you an answer, probably a yes.
A call to the 7/4 Committee, a committee of the Maplewoood Civic Association will get you an answer. They should do this as a marketing plug for the best day of the year in Maplewood! Call Howard????

Last- why not post the groups joining as of now, and forget the Lacrosse Club, the SAP, (what a laugh!), and the HNA. The HNA will be a political plug for vic, whoopee! So Joan, in your push to be inclusive , maybe you are unknowingly being political.
