All New Jersey attorneys are notaries.

I think all NJ lawyers can readily do what they need to get the notary stamp, etc. but they don't have to.

Lawyers can only do two notarial functions, affirmations and acknowlegements. This two functions, however, comprise about 90% of what a notary can do and does do in New Jersey.

And a lawyer in NJ doesn't need a stamp - he or she need only sign it then write or type "Attorney at law in the State of New Jersey"

But you might have trouble if a NJ attorney takes an acknowledgement if the document needs to be recorded out of state. Legal here, but other states might not accept it.

LibraryLady, what other functions does a notary have?

jab: I would think that the "Full faith and Credit" clause of the Constitution covers that. Each State has to accept what is legal in another State.

The Maplewood Library has a public notary. Surprised me, too.
