Many things have got in the way of me jumping on this, and I will try to find stuff out tomorrow, but some questions for those in the know: 1. Is it too late to join the Maplewood Pool? 2. Any clue as to cost to register? It will mostly be my 12 year old who goes, with friends. 3. Can 12 year olds go alone? Course if 1 is "yes" the rest is moot. Please, anyone in the know tell me! And thanks. |

1. Probably not. I've known others who have signed up at the last minute. Check with the rec department or City Hall (you pay at the rec department but I'm not sure where you sign up). 2. It's about $230. 3. Probably, but it is probably against the rules. 4. If it turns out to be moot private-line me and I can get you some guest passes. |

Thanks! If it's the $230-ish figure I can spring for family membership even though I think it will mostly be my kid going with other kid's families. I like the swim lessons idea. I could see me pouring my chubby self into a bathing suit on the weekend and taking her! I wouldn't send her alone if that's not the done thing. I thank you for the guest pass offer -- let's hope I can join-join! |

Early bird rate was $225. Family pass is now probably around $250. Call the Recreation Dept. You can join at any time. I think 12 year olds are supposed to be with a parent, but I could be wrong. |

I had the impression that 12 was the youngest age that was allowed to go without an adult, but I can't swear to it. It seems to me that a responsible 12-year-old is safe at this pool, if (s)he is with one or more others of similar or greater age and reliability. The "buddy system" is sensible at any age, in combination with the lifeguards and other pool staff, to keep kids safe. My teenager lost interest, for the most part, about the time she turned 12, so I still go in order to take the younger sib. |

I do know that guests that are 12 years old must be with an adult. |

hch, I think that only makes sense since there is no way to know if a parent has given permission and you need a responsible party contact immediately if there are any problems at all. Cathy

My husband successfully joined us up yesterday. Something like $260 for a family membership. My kid is very happy! Thanks to all for advice! |

" I could see me pouring my chubby self into a bathing suit on the weekend and taking her!" Yes, this is basically the Maplewood Pool in a nutshell! You pull on the bathing suit (Lands End) without looking in the mirror and then bring the kid(s)and they run off with their friends and then you sit in the shade and read a book until it is time to go home. Occasionally you look up and squint to make sure it is not your kid jumping off the highest diving board. I think I went in the water once last year. Sometimes you also meet and chat with friends. Sometimes the kid(s) drags you to the snack bar where you stand around waiting for french fries that never come. It's a great time for all. Hope to see you there! |

Yep, maybe we'll finally meet and talk about bars in Columbus, Ohio (misspent youth). Do they have chairs? Do they go fast? Or, should you bring your own. I hear there's a lot of rules, but I'm ok with that unless they involve waxing... |

nan, boy do I look forward to the day when I can sit in the shade and read a book! I'm so J. My kids love the pool, but since they're so I young, I can't really let them run off on their own. I spend a lot of time sitting in the baby pool, or carrying the baby around in the training pool while the older two mess around. Cynicalgirl, the first year we moved here I said to myself that I wasn't much of a pool person and didn't join. Boy, was that a mistake! My husband likes to bitch about spending the money and rarely going to the pool, but if I even go just once, it's worth it to me to have the option. And yes, there are a lot of rules (none about waxing however), but most are kind of common sense, and the only ones I've seen break them are the little kids who don't "get" rules to begin with. BTW, if you would like a responsible adult to take your daughter to the pool, I'd be happy to do so, if you think she might like to be a mother's helper for a bit. I could pay her a couple of bucks. Just a thought. |

Could be a plan, Meandthe boys. She's hooked up with summer programs at SOM till like 3 until mid July. After that, not much up. Sound like a win/win you propose. She's been around a neighbor 3 year old, and took a babysitting course at the Y. I don't mind rules! Just checking though. You don't have to wear bathing caps, do you?

Nope, no bathing caps. If that were the case you wouldn't catch me anywhere near the water. It's bad enough I have to be half naked in public, add to that the humiliation of a bathing cap and I'd really be mortified. P/L me with your phone number and some good times to reach you, and let's see what we can arrange. The baby naps in the afternoon, so going later is better for us anyway. Then there's almost the entire month of August we have to deal with, no camp, no nothin' to keep us busy. |

Meandtheboys, I think my son is also looking for a mother's helper/sitting job so you can keep him in mind too. He's playing traveling baseball in the evenings and goes to camp at the end of July. You know how to reach me if you want to broaden your options. I'm not trying to encroach on Cynicalgirl's daughter's options, however, so it's just a suggestion. |

Thanks wendy. Guess it looks like I gotta sit down and figure out a schedule (and a budget!) for my summer, I'll keep your son in mind. Would really like for the boys to see that babysitting can be a boy's job too! |

I babysat when I was a kid. Hmm, maybe that was a foreshadowing of my status as a divorced custodial father. |

Sorry, but the question about chairs brought back memories of all the times we had to sit on the hard pavement. I've been going to Maplewood pool since 1990 with the different kids I'd watch. The family's usually got me a caretakers badge. Most of the time I'd hang in the shallow end up to maybe the second ladder with them, unless the parents said it was okay for them to go in the deeper end. I made sure I knew where the kids were at all times. They all knew where we usually sat, so they'd know where to find me at all times. I was lucky I never had any problems with any of them. It would be funny because even kids I didn't bring to the pool with me would end up dumping their stuff by us. Children have to be at least 12 to go to the pool on their own and they can bring in guests, who are also at least 12. (I just called the rec center to ask) |

Cynicalgirl, Yes! I would love to discuss whatever I still remember about Columbus bars and other amusements to be found on High Street. To answer your question about chairs--there are wooden Adirondack chairs, but some people bring their own. I used to, but last year I just brought a blanket. It's nice to have a chaise lounge in the shade, but it can also be a big shlep. I don't know what I'm doing this year. You should at least bring something to sit on if you don't get a chair. Me&the, I used to watch my son like a hawk, but he's a good swimmer now so I can finally relax a bit. You will be able to do that in a few years. |

I just registered this morning, the family plan is $260, a nanny or other live-in adds $70. |
