For those of you who were aware of the opening (it was posted on the community calendar) the opening has been postponed due to technical difficulties. Below is an excerpt from a press release which explains things. Grand Opening (cancelled) Roller Rink Time: 11:00 AM - 1:00 PM Information: Skate Park Opening Scheduled for June 11, 2005 Cancelled Due to Technical Problems MAPLEWOOD, NJ—The residents of Maplewood who enjoy skating sports have been waiting several years for their skate park to be completed, will have to wait a little longer. According to Jerry Starr, a member of the Maplewood Skate Park Committee, “ A few technical problems have come up with the installation of the rink and it doesn’t look like the work to correct the problems can be completed in time for the scheduled opening on the 11th. Everyone involved is doing what they can, but it’s doubtful the rink will be ready by this Saturday. I’m been told by the town engineer, it will take another week or two to secure the rink properly and make sure it’s safe for use by the public.” A safe place for children and young adults to pursue their passion for skating whether in-line or on skateboards -- that has been the impetus for a two-year initiative by a private group of Maplewood, NJ, citizens who banded together in 2003 to create a public resource for the entire community. The Skate Park Grand Opening was collaboration between the Maplewood Skate Park Committee, Maplewood Recreation Department and the South Mountain YMCA. Highlights of the day’s activities were to include a dedication ceremony honoring those who have contributed to the skate park; an exhibition roller hockey game between the Maplewood Police Department and the Columbia High School Roller Hockey Club; free in-line skating lessons: a skills competition for kids; refreshments and the New Jersey Devil mascot. “It’s unfortunate that we have to cancel the official opening of the Maplewood Skate Park, but the Launch and Grind site is still open and hopefully in a very short amount of time the rink will be open too.”
