Hi Real and Virtual Friends and Acquaintances,

This year, as I have in the past, I volunteered to coordinate the tremendous volunteer effort that is needed throughout the day. I need to find volunteers before I can coordinate though. If you have at least one hour (more is welcome too!) to spare to volunteer to sell/collect tickets in various locations (circus and fireworks area) from 9:00 am until 9:15 pm, the July 4th committee can certainly use you.

Please contact me by private line (or if you know my phone number call but I prefer email) to let me know whether we can count on you. Once I hear from you I'll assign you the location and shift you prefer if it's available. Please ask your friends who may not read MOL if they would like to be involved as well. We need at least 50 people so please consider doing this fun, satisfying gig on our nation's birthday. If you contacted me already this year, I'll call you. If you volunteered last year but haven't contacted me yet, please do so. I lost my list from last year.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Wendy Lauter

PS - Please keep this thread on top with posts that you've PLed me to volunteer. Any questions or comments about the celebration belong in a thread I started in Soapbox. Thanks much!

overtaxd, the troll is helping to keep this post front and center. People will ignore him or her but at least they'll read the thread and volunteer. Boy does he or she give the libertarian party a bad name, huh.

yes , because i am against the abuse of animals as a political stance. you may be ignorant of the difference between a political discussion and a plea for basic human decency but please dont be ignorant of the plight of the animals in the circus' inferno tent!

If any veterans would like to participate in the honor guard on July 4th (flag raising followed by leading the children's parade to the field in Memorial Park for the races) please let me know and I will pass your name on to Bernie.

I hope to see many of you at the Baking contest in Town Hall.

Wendy: Let me know if you need help with the parade again this year. I'll be in the village for the flag raising, etc. anyway and I would be glad to help.

I really, really, really, hate to say this, but I'm sorry that I have to agree with the libertarian's point (although I don't agree with the way s/he's chosen to make it). I have always been very distressed by the existence of the circus at the town's celebration. Small circuses like this are not monitored by any authority in terms of their treatment of their animals. The circumstances under which these animals exist are way less than ideal. Although, we are rarely ever here for the 4th, the one time we were I chose not to patronize the circus. If we should be here some time in the future, I would choose not to patronize it again.

Perhaps there is a better choice the town and the great folks that organize this event can make for future years.

So there you go, I've bumped you back to the top. Good luck and happy 4th.

I know how to get a lot of people to the Forth festivities.

Lets get the veterans to stick the flagpole up Libertarian's.........

No, that won't work and I'd hate to ruin a good flagpole.

Let's stick him in a booth and sell tickets to shoot him with his infamous potato gun.

Libertarian-there are better ways to get someone to see your point...You are like my children..."because you tell me I am wrong Mom I am going to continue to needle you".
You have a good point, but your method of getting it across lacks.

I have to agree with Libertarian, while I have in the past been guilty of going to a circus, even though I had no way in knowing if the animals that this nationally recognized circus were mistreated or not.
Even this Monster knew that there were reasons why I shouldn't patronize, and show support for the enslavement of various animals, for whatever sort of gratification I, my family, or others with me might achieve, regardless of the conditions for the animals, which any person would have to realize would probably be worse with a small circus than with a large one, though I could always be wrong.
For all I know the animals at the circus tent on the 4th are more than happy to be cooped up in cages on a hot day, made to perform for the enjoyment of a few "humans", and the monetary enrichment of a few other "humans".

Hmmmm, maybe I could start my own circus this summer, I can picture it now, round up some children from the area, put them in "small" cages with a little food & water, take them out to perform for the masses under a hot canvas tent, make some money, buy some more children to replace the old/sick/dying ones, and keep the circle going.

Hmmm, now which rant would one prefer to read, Libertarian's, or Monster's....

I'd prefer you both start your own thread (or take it back to SoapBox), research and not presume and let me find some volunteers to collect and sell tickets for a great day which includes many things in addition to the circus with minimal animal use and which treats its animals humanely.

Wendy, its a shame certain people are choosing to focus on something that hardly pertains to the public announcement you are trying to share- hopefully many people will see and volunteer though:-)

Wendy,

We had a meeting last night for the Scouts to make final preparations for our food services.

I discussed your problem and it was suggested that if you could get some tickets to us in the AM at Memorial Park skate house we could sell them for you.

Maybe if you could get some kind of signage explaining your need to sell tickets it would help get the message out.

I know that I will be there and talk with people as they come up. I don't know all of the details that you know so maybe you or somebody could come over and let me know if there is anything in particular that you want people to know, other than you need more money.

We will be at the skate house around 7:30 AM. Since we all look alike in our uniforms just ask for Bob the mailman.

If there is anything else we can help you with please do not hesitate to ask. That is what Scouting is all about.

Thanks letters. What happens on the fourth, is I get a bunch of volunteers to work in shifts throughout the day - selling tickets and collecting tickets for circus and, later, fireworks, etc. If I fall short with volunteers in the morning, which I don't think will happen, I will definitely look for you. We'll probably sell tickets at first near the races and then shift to the skate house near you. See you on the 4th; I'll be sure to stop over and say hi.
