There is a rising concern over the amount of arsenic released by pressure-treated wood used in playground structures and decking materials. I recently read an article about this which also stated that major home centers will be phasing out all pressure treated products due to this concern. QUESTIONS: Are all the playground structures in Maplewood safe for our kids to play on? Is any of the wood used in these structures "pressure-treated" with chemicals including arsenic? How can we find out? I am not usually a paranoid parent but this issue is really on my mind. |

Klien, these concerns have been going on ever since pressure treated wood was introduced to the market. Nobody likes the term arsenic. However, the studies I have heard of find it safe even for containers in which vegetables are grown. Still this type of wood shouldn't be burned in a fireplace or used to cut food on in place of a cutting board. A better process appears to be available now and it sure is a great marketing idea as well. I wouldn't worry about your childs health because of casual contact with pressure treated wood in a park playground. |
