We are hoping to start a kitchen renovation (no structural work) in 2 weeks, but have had trouble getting the electrician/plumber to complete the paperwork. Are we crazy to think we can get permits in this time? Anyone have tips for getting it done quickly? |

Since you have posted your querstion here, I assume your are in Maplewood. You should contact the town's construction official, Bob Mittermaier, at Town Hall (973-762-8120). He can tell you what permits are needed and how to go about obtaining them. Usually the contractor applies for the permit and most local licensed contractors will do this as matter of routine. Which contractors are you using? |

If you have all the required paper work completed it shouldn't take that long to get a permit. Remember once you start the work to make sure you schedule the inspections in advance, if not you can be delayed for some time. The plumber should know this but you might want to remind him. |

Depends. If the contractors filled all the paperwork correctly, you just might make it. More than often, during the review, Bob and his crew find problems or have questions, and you get to start all over again. I recommend that you make the plumber and the electrican take the paperwork in, have a desk pre-review, and let them work things out with the Township. All in all, it would be faster for you. Else, you are going to be trapped in a revolving door going back and forth. Good luck, George |
