Just heard from Senator Corzine's office asking that information about helping Katrina victims be given to Maplewood and South Orange residents.

Many have asked how to make a tangible contribution rather than send money.

Here's how:

The State Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs with the National Guard set up a drop off site in West Orange for cases of bottled water.

Take only cases of bottled water to the West Orange Armory at 1315 Pleasant Valley Way (near Kessler) from 8am-4pm this weekend - Saturday, Sunday, and Monday.

I checked with Kings, Pathmark and Costco and they all have cases of bottled water at this time.

Senator Corzine's message is at: http://corzine.senate.gov/

If you want further information, please call the Joint Operations' Center for the NJ National Guard at 609-530-7010.

Thanks, very much.

I'm going to Costco tomorrow to buy several cases of water to drop off Armory in West Orange. Anyone wanting to pledge money toward some cases please send me a PL at theauntof13@aol.com. I plan to go to Costco by 3pm.

I'm hoping to have enough money to buy 20-30 cases of water. I will post a copy of the receipt on MOL, as well as ask the Armory if they can give me something to prove I brought them the water.

JTA, if you're near a Shoprite check out their prices before you spend the gas to get to Costco. (I like Costco but if that's all you're going for I would consider staying a bit more local) Tomorrow, Shoprite has a 24 pack of Poland Spring on sale for 4.99 (also Aquafina for the same price) and Shoprite Spring water (also 24 pack) for 3.99. That's what I'll be doing.

If Pathmark is more your thing, then their circular for next week (meaning starting tomorrow) shows a 28 count case of Deerpark for $4.77.

Just a thought.

Thanks Wendy for the heads up. I could go to either the Livingston or Springfield Shop Rite. Or I could go to the Livingston Pathmark. Think I'll go to the Livingston Shop Rite because it's not too far from the West Orange Amory.

I also plan to swing by my sister's for some clothes my nephew is donating.

I think I'm going to buy the Poland Spring or Aquafina. I wouldn't drink Shop Rite water unless I was desperate. If I wouldn't drink it, I can't see expecting someone else to drink it (no matter how desperate they are).

I was going to buy 20 cases, but was told it wouldn't be smart to try to carry that much water in my car. I'll see...

Yes, you should be careful about the weight and your car. Just one more reason that they should be figuring out a way for all of us to donate money to some distributor who can deliver the water rather than all these individuals spending $3 plus per gallon for gas in order to bring a couple of cases each. However, I'm in to support several cases for whatever you can fit in your car, so let us know what you need to get to your capacity. Maybe what we need now is a paypal jar for MOL Katrina relief ...

Hi sac-
Thanks. I was only able to fit 25 cases of 35 bottles of water each in my car. The manager at Costco told me any more would be unsafe. I did notice the car handles a little different as I drive to the Armory. They NG at the Armory wasn't sure they'd be there today. I was unable to go back because I had to watch my nephews. One other person emailed me to split the cost. It only came to $45.

I tried to get the Guard to take money to buy more cases, but they were not allowed to.

I asked if it wouldn't be more cost effective to buy water closer to the hurricane area and was told "no' Reason being it would take away the man power needed for the on going rescues and clean up. There is also nowhere to allow the mass amounts of water being dropped off.

It was amazing to watch how things were being done in West ORange. There must have been thousamds of cases of water! While I was there I was told they had spent close to three hours loading up one of the the trucks they were just finishing.

Two flat beds the size of 18 wheelers pulled in as a third was pulling out the other enteracne for it's trip to McQuire Air Force Base. The owners of the towing companies the trucks belonged to were donating their services.

If I didn't have the kids today I'd have gone back for 10 more cases. But with the kids, I'd only be albe to fit 6 cases in my car. My nephew also kept complaing his stomach hurt.

I'm going to make some calls to some of the area water companies and ask what it would cost for them to bring a truckload of water to the area.
