I know it is a bit early to be thinking about pumpkin day ... but, here goes ... does anyone know when the Maplewood Halloween parade is scheduled to take place?

Since that is a Monday, you may well be right. However, last year it was held on the 29th (Friday before Halloween).

The obvious answer isn't always the right one!

I know, I know... I was just having some fun....

Actually it is a very good question. I don't remember what day it was last year. I think that they try not to hold it on the actual day because people want to be home for the trick-or-treaters who come to their houses.

If this is true then they may hold it on Fri the 29th again this year.

It's usually on Halloween. Lat year was an exception because it fell on a Sunday. I was very disappointed because I thought I would actually be able to attend since I normally have to work. The final decision is made by the shop keepers who host the event.

Is this a dumb question but in the last 2 parades, no one paraded. Just kind of a mass wandering around. The kids still had fun, just wondering how we kept missing the parading.

Two years ago there actually was a parade in the midst of the crowd. One year ago we didn't stay long so I don't know (turned out the little one was getting sick).

It is on Halloween this year. Monday the 31st, from 3-5 PM, according to what I put in my calendar.

I heard (on the radio, I think) that it is "slim pickins" for pumpkins this year due to the summer drought. Last week's rain was too late to save them, I'm afraid. If anyone knows of any, please chime in, but it sounded pretty doubtful to me.

Merchants will not allow parade on the weekend because it's bad for business.

It's bad for business when they have it at 3 too, last year I didn't even bother to go to the parade since it was almost impossible for me to get my kids into town right after school. I didn't shop in town for a bit after that, that's how it affected me, I was pissed.

They always have it right at 3. It is a pain to rush down. There is reasoning behind that, I just forget exactly why they don't start it at 4 so school age kids can get dressed and get down there.

I think they've done it on Saturday in the past.

They don't do it on Sunday because some of the stores are not open on Sundays. Merchants are the ones handing out the candy, so it is reasonable to do it on a day they actually work.

I don't really care if they start at 3 -- school kids will be there at 3:30 or 3:45. Let the toddlers have a little time before the crush. I'd be happy if they ran it a little longer, but that is their decision -- there may be good reasons not to run it into the commute hour/after dark!

There is a proposal afloat in Congress to extend daylight savings time. I don't know if it passed, but if/when it takes effect, there will be an extra hour of daylight on Halloween. (And all of our computer operating systems will have to be upgraded!)

It is crazy that they don't push it back for the schools. Luckily this year they have given my son's school half days for this very reason.

For picking pumpkins for a 1 year old, I would recommend going to Turtle Back Zoo. You can walk around and then in the end, each toddler gets a pumpkin.

Just keep repeating, no one is paying the merchants to run this event...it is a gift that they give our children, in and around running their businesses.

So even if the time they choose isn't perfect for us, my response is to say a hearty "Thank You!"

Through 2006, Daylight Saving goes from the first Sunday in April through the last Sunday in October. Beginning in 2007, it will begin the 2nd Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November.
