Assemblyman John F. McKeon will be the Guest Speaker at the monthly meeting of GRASP [Grassroots Action Supporting Progress]. He will be speaking on the upcoming assembly elections and current legislative issues in Trenton. This program, which is open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, September 20, at 7:30pm in the meeting room of the Maplewood Library on Baker St.

GRASP is a local, independent political organization with a progressive focus, made up of residents of Maplewood and South Orange. Its 120 members actively participate in such areas as local and regional political campaigns, foreign policy, electoral reform, education and social security.

GRASP was formed in December 2004 to provide community members with a new opportunity to become more involved in the political and advocacy process. Its goals are to develop informed positions on issues and candidates, share this information with the public and take effective actions in support of these positions.

Mr. McKeon serves the 27th Assembly District, which includes Maplewood and South Orange, and has been our Assemblyman since 2002. He is currently Assistant Majority Whip in the General Assembly where he is chair of the Environment and Solid Waste Committee, and serves on the Financial Institutions and Insurance Committee.

He has sponsored legislation calling for a special Legislative session to examine property taxes. He has also sponsored laws criminalizing racial profiling, authorizing stem cell research in New Jersey, establishing domestic partnerships, setting tough auto emissions standards and preserving thousands of acres in the New Jersey Highlands region.

Membership in GRASP is open to all registered voters. For further information, please send an email to grassrootsaction @comcast.net or contact Dan Kaslow, 973.378.2470.

Intriguing and inspiring words Dan!

Can you break it down?

Specifically are you a partisan group? You state that you participate in local and regional political campaigns. Do you endorse (a) candidate(s) in the upcoming local election?

If so, why?

If not, Why not?

Actually, Dan, I'm wondering about the "120 members".

How's membership defined?

------------

I'm sorry I missed McKeon -- I have a for-life Tuesday night conflict, which is when you meet.
