Assemblyman Mims Hackett, Jr. will be the Guest Speaker at a program sponsored by GRASP, the independent political organization of Maplewood and South Orange. The Assemblyman will be speaking on “What’s Going On In Trenton – And How Things Really Get Done.” This program, which is open to the public, will be held on Tuesday, October 11 at 7:30pm in the Durand Room of the Maplewood Library on Baker St.

Mr. Hackett serves in the NJ General Assembly as representative of the 27th Assembly District, which includes Maplewood and South Orange. He has been our Assemblyman since 2000 and is currently Vice Chair of the State Govern-ment Committee and a member of the Appropriations Committee. During this session, he has been prime sponsor of numerous measures including the creation of the Public Advocate, Stem Cell Research, property tax reform bills, various emergency management bills and the creation of an Alzheimer’s Registry. He also sponsored the Domestic Partnership bill and the legislation preserving the Highlands.

GRASP is grassroots group, with a progressive focus, whose members are actively involved in a wide range of advocacy issues and election campaigns. It was formed in December 2004 to provide community members with a new opportunity to become more involved in the political process.

The goals of GRASP are to develop informed positions on issues and candidates, share this information with the public and take effective actions in support of these positions.

Since its founding, it has held Candidates’ Nights for both Maplewood and South Orange, and presented programs with several elected officials. Its members have been active to unseat the conservative Republican candidate in the 5th Congressional district; have worked to get our Freeholders to make an informed decision on new voting equipment; and spearheaded the creation of the local Stop the War committee.

Membership in GRASP is open to all registered voters. For further information, please send an e-mail to grassrootsaction @comcast.net or contact Dan Kaslow, 973.378.2470.
