The Flu Vaccine is being offered on 12/6 from 4-6:30pm at Townhall. The cost is $20. If you have Medicare coverage and bring your Medicare card, there is no cost to you. Getting the vaccine will not only prevent you from contracting the flu, but will decrease the spread of the flu. This is especially important for people who are in one of the following groups or have contact with someone who is: elderly, an infant or a person whose immune system is weak. If you have questions, please call Townhall (973-762-8120) and ask for the Health Department. Kathy Leventhal Maplewood Township Committee 973-378-9897 |

Also, pregnant women need to bring a note from their healthcare provider indicating that they may receive the Flu Virus Vaccine. Kathy Leventhal Maplewood Township Committee 073-378-9897 |

The town is offering the Flu Vaccine only to people 18 years of age and over because our physicians are not pediatricians. Kathy Leventhal Maplewood Township Committee 973-378-9897 |

C Bataille, No one in my family has caught the flu in 7+ years w/out flu vaccines (Damn, I probably just jinxed us all) The holistic remedy (I'll try to spell it) "Oscillococcinum" by Bioron has worked for me/us. Whole Foods has it in multi-packs now. FYI - I used to think holistic medicine was mumbo-jumbo, but this remedy always works for me. Take it at the first hint of chills, don't eat or drink anything for an hour prior to the first dose. Sounds silly, but don't touch the dose with your hands, pour it under your tongue and let the beads dissolve naturally. Don't eat or drink (not even water) for an hour following the dose. Repeat 2 more doses at 6-hour intervals. I used to catch the flue every year - I was a total skeptic about the Bioran remedy, maybe it works by suggestion, I don't know, but it works. |

We've only had one case of flu in our family in over 20 years of marriage and more than a decade of having two kids. I think that, for all 4 of us, we've had no more than 6 flu shots (only the adults) in all that time. No holistic remedies either. So, perhaps it is just the luck of the draw ... |

On the other hand I've never had the flu in my life with or without shots but plan to get a shot AND stock up on that 'Oscillococcinum' too. Getting scairdy-cat in my old age... |

Providing the Flu Vaccine is an excellent service for most members of the community. However, I would like to remind readers that most advise against the Flu Vaccine for people with egg allergies. Good health to all. |

Lydia, it's certainly true that not everyone needs to get the flu vaccine. In our family we get the flu vaccine because two of us have asthma (the folks most at serious risk from flu are those with pulmonary problems and those with less than optimally functioning immune systems: the elderly, folks on chemo or ARVs- and all their household members should get vaccinated as well.) Also, having one member working in a hospital and one in a school means both increased exposure and increasing risk of exposing other vulnerable folks. Having done peds HIV work and peds oncology work for many, many years I take these things very seriously. Thousands of people die from the flu every year, in this country. I intend not to have a family member, including myself, be part of that statistic. BTW, I believe in lots of holistic rememdies. This is just one situation I choose to go with the stuff that has hard science behind it.

C Bataille, I'm a big believer in taking the route (holistic or tradiional) that suits your needs. If my family had any outstanding risk factors, I'd be first in line rolling up my sleeve for that shot o' prevention. As David Buckley says, "Be well, all"

getting the flu vaccine does not give you a blanket immunity against the flu, while it definitly is better to have gotten the vaccine than not, it is still possible to get the flu after having recieved the vaccine, especially if it mutates, which it seems to do every year. I was at my doctors office the other day & he offered the flu shot to me, but I had to refuse, I believe getting sick (if it happens) makes me stronger, that being said - I haven't even had a cold in about 11 years. Maybe if I get sick this year I'll change my mind, but until then.... |

I had the flu in 1991 - pretty much missed work the entire month of December. I am young (ish) and healthy and not really much of a risk for serious flu complications. But I never want to be that miserable again if I can help it. So, with the exception of last year, I've never missed a vaccine since. Besides which, TS has asthma, and I don't want to bring it home. Lydia is right - it is a personal choice. |
