Nancy Sobieski, who is heading the CBAC this year has asked me to post the following invitation to readers of MOL:

"The Citizens' Budget Advisory Committee will be holding its first meeting on January 4, 2006 at 8 PM in Town Hall. Joe Manning, Maplewood's new Business Administrator, Peter Fresulone, the Financial Officer, and Kathy Leventhal from the Township Committee will be present to discuss the budget process and timing for this year."

There will also be an opportunity during the meeting to learn about the different subcommittees, each of which works with one or more township departments to review their budget and make recommendations to the Township Committee on what should be approved, questioned or changed; and to sign up to work on one or more of these committees.

If you have ever questioned where your municipal and/or education tax dollars are going or questioned the appropriateness of a township or board of education expenditure or program, this is the opportunity for you to present your point of view where it will do the most good.

If you are the least bit interested in becoming part of this process, I hope to see you at the January 4th meeting.

Any questions regarding the CBAC can be posted here and I or another member of the CBAC will try to answer them.

Will all CBAC committees meet in the evening in order to allow volunteers that work during the day?

I know of at least one committee in the past that would only meet during the day.

It depends on the committee. The committee I was on last year didn't have any formal meetings. We used e-mail to discuss the issues and individual members of the committee met with department heads according to their own schedule.

The committee I was on the year before that met only in the evenings.

It is pretty much up to the committee chair and the members to decide what will work best. However, if department heads are only available during the day, then at least some of the members of that committee will have to be available at that time.

It is also recommended that committee members attend at least some of the budget hearings. These are held whenever the TC members and the agency heads can get together.

Reminder: CBAC meetings start January 4, 2006, Town Hall, 8 PM. Come for an overview of what the CBAC does and an opportunity to sign up to a part of the committee(s) of your choice. This is a great opportunity to become more informed and involved and maybe even to make a difference.

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to get more involved in your community, learn more about existing and proposed municipal services, meet more of your neighbors and/or municipal leaders, have some influence in the making of municipal policy decisions for the coming year, and/or do something about our escallating municipal taxes, you should seriously consider volunteering to serve on the Citizen's Budget Advisory Committee this year.

If this sounds like something you would like to do, come to the organization meeting of the CBAC on January 4, 2006 at 8 PM and sign up for the subcommittee or subcommittees that interest you most.

Joan, tomorrow night is the meeting and I see we are both on the same committee.

Listen, I'm really excited about serving on the "Public Safety Committee" this year, and was wondering if you would be willing to help me out?

You know how I can get when I really get excited about something, so in case I over heat when we get on the subject of CCTV, would you please hold my hand???

Art: We were on the same subcommittee last year if you recall and you did just fine. Relax, I have faith in you.

Reminder: the CBAC organization/orientation meeting is this evening at 8 PM at Town Hall. New members are very much welcome. Do stop by even if you think this might be something you would like to get involved with. No commitment is necessary.

...well, did you make it? I was hoping you would introduce yourself to me. I don't know if I've ever met a real live Libertarian before?

If you did make it there you had to be impressed by the great turn out. I believe there were over 25 people who showed up. It's was nice to see this much interest in our community...
