Is this legal? I saw a house on Elmwood with a brand new central air unit right in front of the house. It ain't the prettiest thing, and before the Born Free activists get all twisted, I think that it does matter what you do to your house if it affects the neighbors' property values. |

Perhaps they plan to put an enclosure around the unit? TomR |

You need a building permit for central air so the location is probably legal. As TomR says they may be going to enclose it, hopefully with shrubbery in the spring. |

You need to get a permit to install AC, but you need a variance to install the units in the front of the house. I know. I have a corner house and both sides are "front yards" and we had to get a permit to put them on the front "side." And our variance requires a shrubbery (not too big, and nice. "NIIII") But there are many Maplewood homes with AC units in the front that were done illegally - I checked out several. If you live within 250 feet of the house with the unit in front, you should have received registered mail about the BZA meeting to consider the variance. If you didn't get such notice, the placement is probably illegal. If it is illegal, and someone doesn't rat em out now, or the city catch it on its own, it will probably prevent the issuance of a CO when the house changes hands. |
