i'm concerned joe thinks this town is going to hell in a handbasket. what other issues have brought you to that decision? i moved here not too long ago & now am wondering if it wasn't such a great idea. |

js, Joe doesnt think this town is going to hell in a handbasket...he was referring to a former Maplewoodian who loves to occasionally pop onto MOL and spout some vitriol. I grew up in Staten Island...it was a fine place to grow up (back then)..alot of bodies got dumped in wooded areas there back then too...didnt make it a bad place to live...they werent dumping them at our curb and they werent neighbors' bodies. |

My point: By looking at the map, I'm guessing the body parts were found in the part of the reservation that's officially in Maplewood. So does that mean South Orange is safe and Maplewood is dangerous? Another story: A man heard that old adage "80% of accidents happen within five miles of your home" so he moved.

The reservation is neither South Orange nor Maplewood, it is Essex County property. By the way, they found only a man's torso in the bag. The police think the victim knew it was going to happen. He was seen shopping frequently at "Just Shirts" in the last two weeks. Just a little dismemberment humor to lighten the thread. |

That's not an entirely accurate statement. The Reservation is indeed located within several municipalities, even though it is county property. You were correct that South Orange is not one of them, but Maplewood is.

The bags were found near Glenview Road. Is that Maplewood or South Orange? Either way, we're cutting it pretty thin (no pun intended). Let's just go with "Essex County" and call it a day http://www.nj.com/weblogs/print.ssf?/mtlogs/njo_ledgerupdate/archives/print10402 0.html |

"Near Glenview Road" could be either South Orange or Maplewood. However, little or none of the actual reservation property is in South Orange, so I'm guessing it was Maplewood. |

Glenview road is in South Orange, and is the last street before "county land" within Maplewood. So can we all agree body parts were found within a County reservation in the township of Maplewood near South Orange Village's Glenview Road. ????? I don't see why our government should go and attack the media to get this corrected? Like the media ever corrects themselves. |

This has been bothering me since I saw this last night on MOL. Last Tuesday about 2:50pm I was driving on South Orange Ave towards Pleasant Valley Way. As I came to the first area where cars could pull over I noticed a black pickup and red car parked with the doors open. Off to the side, slightly in the road was a large black garbage bag. I remember thinking 'this is odd. Maybe I should call the police...' Even went as far as opening my cellphone to make the call. At the same time I'm thinking 'Gee I'm not even sure if this is Millburn, Maplewood, South Orange or the County.' And what am I going to say? It looks like someone is throwing bags of trash in the Res? So I didn't call. Should I call and tell them what I saw? At the time I figured the cops would blow me off and the kid with me even said why are you going to call the police. My mom says the police aren't going to believe me; a friend said why bother I really don't know anything. And a third said I should call.

Whoa....you just jogged my memory! I saw the bag in the road too. I drive that way at 3:00 to pick up the kids from school. It is very fuzzy - but I remember having seen, what I thought was a bag of leaves or something, practically sitting in the road. Couldn't tell you what day it was though.... I don't remember any cars near by either. |

JTA, whenever you get that little voice in the back of your mind saying "maybe I should call..." , it means you absolutely should call!! Don't worry about what the person on the other end of the phone may think, if something seems suspicious then it is and the police are there to take those calls. Don't waste time wondering what agency to call, the information will make it's way to the proper dept' Always try to get some type of info, You don't have to go crazy trying to remember everything, just a few good details would be ok, when cars are involved try getting the plate #. Just remember, if you think you should call them you must call. If it turns out to be nothing so be it, but there's always that chance it could be criminal activity. |

I called Essex County Police and told them what I saw. They're going to have an investigator call me tomorrow. I just hope they don't involve my friend's kid as she was in the car with me. I'm kicking myself because over the past 10 days or so I've called South Orange, Livingston and Maplewood for things I thought were strange at the time. I'm kicking myself for not calling this time. I think another problem is I know my cellphone doesn't work in that part of the reservation. My friend who told me I should call suggested having the police hypnotize me because I might remember more. At least I remember it was a black pick up truck and red car, and the time frame I saw them. KMK was the bag right before the first pull off area going west bound? Kind of on a slant to the road? At first I thought it might have been leaves. Then I thought maybe it's filming for the Sopranos; and felt stupid. It was the cars parked right there the way they were that sent up the 'hmmm, this doesn't seem right' thought. I'm going to freak if they discover the bag were dumped Tuesday. |

JTA - I think the bag was near the entrance to the oval(the Girl Scout camp). I am getting the heeby jeebies....were the cars parked near the pay phone? I have some weird memory of that too. Like - I might of thought that they were calling for help and it was all under control etc. After 9/11 my husband saw some guys videotaping their approach to the Holland Tunnel and continuing to videotape all the way through. He jotted down the liscense plate number and went about his business. Six months later he found that scrap of paper and remembered that he had forgotten to call it in! He placed one quick call. The Port Authority was all over it within a day....they questioned him (very politely) and asked about his delay in reporting it etc. THe kicker was that the license plate was registered to the US government! It was an undercover operation of some sort....they followed the investigation all the way to DC. |

I mentioned the Scout Camp sign to the officer last night when I spoke to him! But I thought it was the Boy Scout Camp! Funny I'm now reading you saw the same thing! Too strange. I have to drive through there again this afternoon. I'm going to see if I can pinpoint exactly where I saw the garbage bag.

That's totally important!! Good for you! You know where they parked, so maybe they can get tiretracks. Shoeprints. Discarded cigarette butts. You know when, so maybe they can check the outdoor security cameras of any businesses they would have passed before or after!! (And they'll know what to look for!) You are great! |

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said the three additional bags were found near the first bag by the same officer. "We have legs, arms, thighs," he said. "No feet, torso, head or hands." "Hey, here's a leg. Here's a wing. Hey, what do you like, the leg or the wing, Henry?" |
