The family took a walk around the upper wyoming area yesterday and I was paying particular attention to the Gas Lights. We noticed a definite gas (or burning gas) smell as we passed some of them. Is that normal? The lights must burn VERY hot, because we saw some lights with melted outer glass. We also saw some "bulbs" inside that were broken, but still glowing. Is that dangerous? I'm not sure how they really work, so I'm not sure that they are really bulbs. I love the lights, but they are very mysterious and seem dangerous but I've never heard of any problems with them.

I think there's a problem with those lights. You may want to send John Gross an email. The cost of gas has skyrocketed and an improperly functioning street light could cost a small fortune. I'm not sure who is responsible for repair, but I hope for safety sake as well it's looked after.

PSE & G is responsible for the actual repair. However, Pizzaz is correct and you should send an email to John Gross (Jgross@southorange.org) with the location(s) of any lamps in need of repair.

I heard from the PSEG person (a fill-in for the one guy who normally fixes *all* the lights for SO, Glenridge & others - Essex Co, I guess) that they rely on folks to call & report problems & they were very responsive when I called to get a few on my block serviced.

I emailed John Gross and minutes later the fire dept appeared and PSEG will be coming too. Great response from the town! No big problems found yet

The "guy" from PSEG who has been fixing these gas lights for years, is very nice and very passionate about them, too!

When I first moved in a few years back, he saw me, and very nicely asked me to speak to the landscapers to nut use trimmers or bump their equipment into the pole -- since the gas mantles are so fragile.

Last year I noticed that he seemed to be "refurbishing" many of them with fresh paint. I thanked him, you could tell he was happy to do his job and be appreciated for it, too!

/p

PSEG also came and fixed the innards of our light and cleaned the outer globe. There is a lot of bashing of our town government here, but in this instance they acted quickly and professionally. Many thanks to John Gross.

My experience with John is that he has been extremely responsive and helpful anytime I have had to contact him.

But then why can't the new gaslight-like fixtures that were knocked on the west end of South Orange Avenue not replaced?

It has been ages.

Maintenance is extremely important. If you can't keep what you have then...

talk - Have you tried contacting him about this?
At times I have noticed things in town that one would think should be noticed by someone in the Village, but somehow have escaped attention. (And I'm not referring to the big stuff, e.g. condition of the Beifus fence, lack of a walkway, etc).

Usually, if a resident emails or calls John, DPW or other departments, the matter is remedied pretty quickly. At least this has been my experience.

And as you know, I'm pretty critical of a lot that goes on in this town.

Hmmm, maybe a quick call about the deplorable condition of the Town Hall would do the trick...

My guess is a lot of calls have been made - quick and not so quick.

And of course there's the water problem and all the redevlopment problems.

OK -Let's leave it at this: Sully got very quick response and he's pleased with that. I had a very bad code situation near me several years ago and John did the best he could with a very difficult situation.

Just drove by the corner of S.O. Ave and Ridgewood and they were raising a new gaslight.
The crew was also working on another one a further east on the Avenue. Somebody make a phone call or does PSEG read MOL too??

That was done by a car accident that my children and I witnessed a few months ago. Some woman in a compact car just barrelled into the light and dented the church fence. I still see the top of the light on the sidewalk green.
