SHOULD I GUESS WHAT HAPPENED TO THE EDUCATION THREAD?. SHOULD I GUESS IT HAD TO DO WITH THE INFORMATION THAT I JUST HEARD FROM MY CHILD? SHOULD I GUESS ONCE AGAIN THAT I AM IN THE DARK? I HAVE NO INFORMATION FROM THE SCHOOL, THE COMMUNITY, THE MESSAGE BOARD............. WHAT AM I TO THINK? ALL OF YOU SHOULD WAKE UP. EVERYTHING IS A STAKE. WHEN I HEAR THAT A JEEP PULLS UP AND PEOPLE GET OUT WITH SKI MASKS ON AND "BEAT UP" KIDS AT THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT IS ALL I KNOW AT THIS POINT WHAT SHOULD I THINK? WHAT I DO THINK IS THAT ALL OF YOU NEED TO ATTEND MUNICIPAL MEETINGS AND DEMAND SECURITY FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL BECAUSE THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY AND ITS FUTURE RESTS ON IT. ONCE RUMOR (OR TRUTH) SPREADS AND THE SCHOOLS GO DOWN - WELL IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW MUCH ART OR ART CENTERS OR MISPLACED SCULPTURES OR "DIVERSITY" YOU HAVE IT ALL GOES AWAY. THE SCHOOLS ARE BEING IGNORED BY THE MUNICIPALITIES - MAPLEWOOD AND SOUTH ORANGE. IF THIS IS RUMOR THEN IT WILL SPREAD IF IT IS TRUTH IT WILL BECOME TWISTED AND IF ANYTHING DID HAPPEN IT IS ABSOLUTELY WRONG THAT THERE IS NO SYSTEM IN PLACE TO PREVENT THIS IT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE SCHOOL BUT WHAT IS COMING TO IMPACT THE SCHOOL. I WANT TO KNOW WHAT REALLY HAPPENED AND HOW WE PREVENT IT. I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO GO OUT AND FIND OUT................... |

Please calm down - Education was pulled, I suspect, on account of a thread that had nothing to do with the high school. Perhaps you can get in touch with the HSA at Columbia to confirm or deny rumors to date. |

This was in the paper (either the New Record or the Star Ledger). Read it. And please learn the location of your caps unlock key. If you unlock your caps and ask nicely, maybe one of us will go find the article, if you don't get the paper. |

Doulamomma, for you I'll dive in the newpaper stack. Took some hunting, since I had to go to the horrible Star-Ledger website, but here it is, from a multi-topic article (below a car-jacking at the Short Hills Mall). Here is the full article, with the Columbia story in bold. (I'm attaching the whole thing to give a sense of the placement that it had in the paper): ------------------------------------------------ Law & Order Cop video allowed at harassment trial Thursday, February 09, 2006 NEWARK: A Newark police captain's harassment trial continued yesterday in Newark Municipal Court, where a judge agreed to play his accuser's videotaped statement in open court. The accuser, police officer Darlene Young, gave the statement to internal affairs investigators hours after she was allegedly groped by her supervisor, Capt. Ralph Boswell. She then filed a criminal complaint charging him with harassment. The tape may be played when the trial continues on March 7. Young accused Boswell of grabbing her arms and trying to kiss her while they both worked an overnight shift in the department's North District headquarters on July 20. Boswell denies the charge and had filed a counter-complaint accusing Young of filing a false police report. The trial began in November, and last month Boswell was promoted from lieutenant to captain. He received a raise and a new assignment, commanding the department's overnight patrols. Last week, he was suspended after he was accused of having sex with a woman in his marked patrol car. Young's lawyer, Joseph Govlick, asked Judge Karimu Hill-Harvey yesterday for copies of internal affairs reports on the recent allegation. But she denied the request. SUV carjacked at shopping mall MILLBURN: Two women were carjacked at gunpoint on Tuesday night outside of a restaurant at the Mall at Short Hills, police said. Capt. David Barber said the women had just left Joe's American Bar & Grill around 10:15 p.m. when the incident occurred. The women, both 32, got into a silver 2004 Jeep Liberty when they were approached by two men, said Barber. The man on the driver's side had a gun, and told the women to get out of the car and leave the keys inside the vehicle. The two women did and ran back into the restaurant where they called police. Barber said the suspects fled in the Jeep and were followed closely by another car carrying passengers that police believe also were involved in the carjacking. The suspect with the gun was wearing camouflage pants and a wool cap with an orange stripe. There was no description of his accomplice. Police said the Jeep had a New Jersey license plate, PZJ20V. Attic blaze damages home's second floor MILLBURN: A blaze erupted in the attic of an empty house on Lawrence Drive on Tuesday night, causing damage to the upper part of the home, said authorities. The fire, said Battalion Chief Edward H. Wade III, appeared to be accidental. Firefighters were called to 120 Lawrence Drive when smoke was spotted flowing from the house. The fire appeared to have sparked in an open area behind a bedroom on the second floor, said Wade. No one was injured. High school melee ends in 5 arrests MAPLEWOOD: Five people were arrested at Columbia High School yesterday following a lunchtime brawl between two students, said police. The cause of the dispute was still unknown yesterday, said Capt. Walter Mueller, but tension between the two students started earlier this week. Yesterday, a 17-year-old student called five of his buddies to the school to jump his nemesis, said Mueller. The five friends arrived at the high school and assaulted a 16-year-old boy in the parking lot outside the school. When the 16-year-old boy's friends saw what was going on, they ran outside to help him. Police were called at 12:03 p.m. The five individuals who arrived at the school were arrested. They are: Carlos Folkes, 20, of Newark; Romel Maycock, 23, of Rahway; Jarell Frazer, 19, of Newark; Steve Balbosa, 20, of Orange; and Jones Milton, 18, of Newark. No one was injured in the scuffle. The two juveniles were not charged and released to their parents. Workers find forklift stolen from plant FAIRFIELD: Employees returning to work at the Unifoil Corp. discovered a forklift had been stolen from the site, police said yesterday. Police were called to the Daniel Road business Monday at 6 a.m. when employees discovered an overhead bay door on the east side of their building was open. The door was open and a Hyster forklift was missing, they reported to police. The forklift, which is valued at $10,000, was last seen the previous Friday at 9 p.m. when employees had shut the warehouse for the weekend and locked the bay door. Police are asking anyone with information about the theft to call the Fairfield Police at (973) 227-1400. Three teens charged in mugging tries BLOOMFIELD: Three East Orange youths were arrested and charged with assault and robbery after authorities said a police officer watched the group chase one man down Bloomfield Avenue before attempting to rob another along Broad Street. The boys, aged 14, 16 and 17, confronted the first man Friday as he was walking down Bloomfield Avenue, punched him and chased him until he ducked into a bar, said Capt. Michael Behre, a police spokesman. A few minutes later, the boys ran down Broad Street after another man, he said. The officer had already called for police backup and, as the boys tried taking the second man's cell phone, police drove up, ran after the boys and arrested them, Behre said. They were all taken to the Essex County Youth House in Newark, he said. Eighth-grader seized with a loaded gun NEWARK: A William H. Brown Jr. Academy eighth- grader was arrested yesterday morning after school officials discovered he had brought a loaded handgun into the Bergen Street building, authorities said. Shortly after the school bell rang, at 8:30 a.m., a teacher questioned the 13-year-old boy about what he had tucked in his waistband, said Capt. Derek Glenn, a police spokesman. The boy tried running away but was tackled by the educator and a .380-caliber handgun slid from his waistband, he said. It was recovered by a nearby security guard, Glenn said. The youngster was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun and possession of a defaced weapon by a police detective participating in the Adopt-A-School program, Glenn said. The program was started earlier this school year so officers can interact with the students and intervene quickly if necessary, he said. Burglars grab cash at three salons NUTLEY: Hair and nail salons have been the latest victims of a string of burglaries in the township. Two Franklin Street salons were broken into Monday night and one along Union Avenue was hit Tuesday night, said Lt. Steven Rogers. In each case either the front or rear door was kicked in and about $100 was taken, he said. A home was broken into over the weekend when a burglar went through the unlocked front window of a Prospect Street home, Rogers said. Police are continuing the burglary investigation, he said. In a separate incident, authorities said 10 ounces of cocaine, worth about $15,000, was recovered after police stopped a motorist for an illegal U-turn last week. The driver, Maurice Sessoms, a 28-year-old from Amityville, N.Y., was arrested and charged with possession, Rogers said. Around 9:22 p.m. on Feb. 2 police were parked along Washington Avenue when they saw Sessoms make the U-turn at the corner of Washington and Pershing avenues, Rogers said. They stopped the man a short while later and while questioning him one of the officers saw a clear-plastic bag filled with white powder tucked into an open McDonald's bag, Rogers said. It tested positive for cocaine, he said. Sessoms is being held at Essex County Jail on $100,00 bail. } |

Hmmm - it seems none of the 5 "friends" of the 17 year old student were residents of South Orange or Maplewood. |

Thank you for finding the article. I think the thing I question is where is the security around the High School. It appears that it is an outside element be attracked for whatever reason to the school. How do they get in without anyone noticing? Are the students in the school supposed to be? Why were the students fighting in the school not addressed by the police department? What stops someone with a weapon from entering while our kids are in the school? and where oh where was notification to the parents to let them know the incident occurred and how it was being addressed rather than letting rumors float or worse yet allowing no info to go home to parents. Most kids don't go home and talk to their parents and most HS parents I spoke to didnt even know. There are very good things happening at the High School but I think safety and security needs to be addressed immediately. Kids that don't belong should not be there. There is also no reason why the Board of Education administration did not address this with the parents. This is beyond being just a CHS issue. We are not talking about a scuffle between students in the school. We are talking about thugs from outside entering school property with the intent to hurt. Anyone can get hurt along the way. This is a community issue because it impacts our entire school system and our entire community (South Orange and Maplewood). It impacts the value of our kids education and their safety, it impacts our housing value.

This was in the Star Ledger the other day. With the Education Topic pulled I didn't know where to post it. This is as good a place as any. How many remember not long ago the posters who were angry there were Maplewood, Irvington and Newark Police cars watching those leaving a recent event at the high school? Hmmm, not two weeks later this incident happens. Makes you wonder if the police suspected something was brewing.

I'm curious of how the Columbia administration will address what this 17 year old has done. This has to be addressed agressively guns are to accessible to the youth - the story about the child from Newark with the loaded gun blatantly in his waistband while in school is shocking. Vigilent & Agressive is the only way |

It's interesting to me that all five perpetrators were actually arrested. In a situation like this, it would seem likely that some or all of them would just run off and elude capture. The fact that they were apprehended suggests good police work or, as Just The Aunt speculates, maybe the authorities knew in advance that something was brewing. Also, it’s not clear to me that the intruders ever entered the school building (as Talk-it-up claims). The skirmish took place in a parking lot around lunchtime. Did they go inside first and then leave the building with their target/victim? Or did they know he would be outside at that time, or did they entice him out? I think there’s a lot more to learn about this ugly little incident.

I'm fondly remembering the days when I attended high school not so long ago. There was no "security" whatsover. No metal detectors, no guards, no ID badges. We didn't need any of that. |

thegood- When I to Columbia more then twenty years ago there were security guards - but there were only TWO of them! A man everyone called 007 and a woman, whose name I can't remember. We had id cards but we didn't have to wear them around our necks. I don't see it as a big deal the students have to wear id tags. Most people in the real world have to wear them at work. |

according to reports from CHS students and classroom discussion CHS students had about this incident, entire altercation took place outside of school, in the parking lot outside the cafeteria at lunchtime. Incident was supposedly started by friction between two boys over a girl. Incident was viewed by many CHS students who were in cafeteria for 6th period lunch. There was a large and extremely rapid police response, I believe from several towns. |

Thanks, Susan1014, for finding/posting the story. Not a nice incident, but it also seems like it could happen anywhere. Hopefully there will be some examination of the students involved as well (though I can't imagine there has not been...) Good start, but I'm not sure the nametags are enough - how hard could they be to copy? |
