According to the Weather Bug update I just got the new expected accumlation for our area is now 16-24 inches! Earlier it was only 12-16 inches. I think it's safe to predict schools will be closed tomorrow. According to today's Ledger: "Gov. Jon Corzine said the timing of storm on the weekend made the declaration of a state of emergency less likely. But if snow accumulations reach 12 inches and icy conditions materialize, he said he would consider such a declaration today..." We already have 10 inches on our deck! |

JTA..its bad but schools aren't necessarily gonna be closed tomorrow. The storm will be long gone and the roads cleared. Why don't u wait a while before declaring that prediction? |

Hmmm some school districts have already announced they will be closed tomorrow. The last time I said I thought the schools would be closed, they were. I know plenty of kids who hope there is no school. Maybe if they all wear their jammies inside out and backwards, it will happen!

and flush ice cubes down the toilet. at least that's what my dtr's teacher told her. Why are the teachers encouraging children to do rituals to get out of school???? what kinda message is that? |

I'm one such teacher! I asked my students to predict the dates of this winter's snowdays. The student with highest percentage right gets a prize. Maybe I'm buying into the hype, but snowdays are just plain fun for kids. (Yes, as a parent myself, I find them a complete drag.) So why not accept a reality and make it positive? |

What kind of educational experiment is this for kids? Sounds like you are creating a lottery. Is that what our classrooms are about these days? |

Let's lighten up people! My 5 & 6 year old are ecstatic about all this snow. They can't wait until we bundle-up and go out in it. (And then come back in in 10 minutes, freezing and dragging snow through the house to insist on hot chocolate and marshmallows in front of the fire!) Surely you haven't forgotten the simple joy of a school snow day? I grew up in waaaay upstate NY and it took a storm like this one for our schools to close for a day. I still remember feeling like a snow day was a holiday. And I did enjoy school...it's just a kid thing. I can totally see how some teachers would get a similar feeling. Do we really want business-only, no-fun-allowed meanies in charge of teaching our kids? |

It's actually an exercise in probability and percentages. You could choose every single day in Feb, for example, and get 5 days right, but your percentage would be fairly low. From what I hear, some workplaces bet actual money on the Sweet Sixteen...can you imagine? |

Supposedly, coming soon to the Chicago Merc - snow futures. Bet on how much snow Central Park will get. I heard it on 1010 WINS, but I came in in the middle, and I wasn't sure if they were kidding. |

Aunt, next time you make a thread about snow, tone down the title! I thought there was an emergency or something. |
