Armored car robbery goes awry Guard is wounded in gunfight as vehicle rolls through Livingston Wednesday, February 15, 2006 BY PHIL READ AND MARK MUELLER Star-Ledger Staff The steel-sheathed interior of an armored car became a roving shooting gallery yesterday as would-be robbers and a guard exchanged fire in the truck while it careened down a busy street in Livingston, authorities said. In a scene that could have been ripped from a bloody Quentin Tarantino heist film, one or more men somehow gained access to the armored car as it idled outside a Bank of America branch, then opened fire moments after the vehicle pulled onto South Livingston Avenue, Livingston Police Chief Michael Erb said. Erb credited a bulletproof vest with saving the life of one guard, who was struck in the chest but not seriously injured. The guard's partner -- the vehicle's driver -- returned fire as the armored car rolled an eighth of a mile down the street, the shots shattering the calm of the suburban community. "They were shooting at each other. Pow. Pow," said Keith Hines, who watched the incident unfold at a gas station where he works. "My heart was beating like crazy." Police later arrested three men in South Orange following a high- speed, 20-minute chase aided by a State Police helicopter. Authorities continued to search last night for a possible fourth suspect, though it was not certain that more than three people participated in the robbery. The confusion arose after the armored car's driver described one suspect as a light-skinned man with reddish hair, Erb said. The suspects in custody are black men, the chief said. "There might or might not be a fourth suspect," Erb said. "That remains under investigation at this point." The three men in custody, said to be in their early to mid-30s, were being questioned at South Orange police headquarters last night. Authorities did not release their names. The names of the two guards, employees of Maryland- based Dunbar Armored Car Service, also were withheld. The guard struck in the chest was treated for minor injuries at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. "Thank God he was wearing a bulletproof vest," Erb said. "Certainly the injury is not life-threatening, but he's going to be sore for a while." An undetermined amount of cash taken from the truck was recovered, the chief said. The robbery occurred just before 2:30 p.m., when the two guards returned to the armored car with a cash pickup from the Bank of America branch. The chief said it remains unclear how one or more of the suspects entered the vehicle. "That's something we are very interested in finding out," Erb said, adding it appeared that both guards were taken by surprise. Though the suspect or suspects in back gave no orders, something caught the attention of the guard in the passenger seat as the truck pulled onto South Livingston Avenue, Erb said. When the guard swiveled around, at least one suspect opened fire without a word, the chief said. The driver returned fire as the vehicle continued to roll down the street. The guard struck in the chest jumped from the moving vehicle and ran into Nero's Restaurant & Cocktail Lounge nearby, telling those inside that he'd been shot and asking them to call police. "For somebody who got shot, he was pretty good," bartender Michelle Prignano said. "He really had a hold on everything." The suspects, meanwhile, fled in a trailing Jeep Cherokee through Livingston, Millburn and South Orange as authorities gave chase. After a collision with a vehicle driven by a South Orange detective, the Jeep veered onto an access road for a public works facility, Erb said. In deep snow left by Saturday's storm, the robbers' luck ran out. The men ran from the Jeep into the surrounding woods as the vehicle became bogged down. Two suspects were captured almost immediately, Erb said. Police found the third suspect about 40 minutes later. Authorities have yet to determine how much money was in the truck and how much was taken. Police continued to search the area where the men were arrested. Staff writers Elizabeth Moore and Katie Wang contributed to this report.

I agree with you Pippi! It doesn't make sense! The first call I made from my cellphone about what was happening was at 2:50pm. This was after almost being hit by the SUV and two police cars a couple of blocks from the bendon Ridgewood; going to Jefferson School to pick up a friend's child; going back to my car; driving back the way I came where at Third Street we ran into the Road Block. I thought for sure I left my house about 2:20pm. My sister pointed out though I left, but then came back because - get this, I forgot my cellphone! So let's say that made it 10 minutes later, I would have seen the SUV about 2:30pm. Something I don't understand. The papers say it was a 5 mile chase. I don't think so! It's as if they believe the SUV came down South Orange Ave into South Orange. They also don't mention Millburn Police was chasing the SUV through Maplewood. One thing I do know. The Snooze Wrecked won't have the story this week! |

Just the Aunt maybe you should stay off your cell phone while you are driving and pay more attention to the road. Secondly why call the police and tie up the line during an emergency. |

Frank- Considering this is your first post I'll be nice and not ask if you have a problem reading problem?! First off, where do I ever say I called the police on my cellphone or at all yesterday? Didn't say anything like that I know of! While stopped in the traffic, I asked the cop by the Third Steet road block if they caught the SUV guy. Other people were asking him quastions as well. I spoke to the cop standing on the bridge on Montrose and Meadowbrook. Why would I have even had a reason to believe he was there for the SUV situation. I was very shocked when he said he was. Next, why would I call the police when two police cars were already chasing the SUV? DUH!!! Last, how to you come to the conclusion I wasn't paying attention to the road? Didn't I say I saw the flahsing lights coming toward me so I PULLED OVER? Perhaps you were the moron who didn't which caused the SUV and the two police cars chasing it to go around the the idiot in front of them into my lane where I was PULLED OVER to the side of the road at a COMPLETE STOP when they almost ran into me. Some people just make my blood boil. Especially stupid people... |

"suspects, meanwhile, fled in a trailing Jeep Cherokee" Um, unless there were only 2 involved directly in the gun fight, then the Jeep trailing behind/picking up the armed men had to be driven by someone... wouldn't it be pretty easy to know whether there was a 4th suspect? |

Maybe you didn't call the police from your cell phone but you were probably on the phone when you were driving and this is illegal. And driving while talking on your cell phone with a friend's child in the car, very irresponsible. |

Nora- There are a couple of threads where I posted what happened with me. I guess if people hadn't read the posts in the other threads they might come to that conclusion. But as Pippi posted she had read them. I was responding to her post knowing she read the other posts in the other threads. This is why I responded with the time the first call I made being at 2:50pm. In the other threads I said I was surprised to find West Orange and Orange Police cars parked on Montrose. When I was told by the police officer on Meadowbrook they were looking for the bank robbers who were armed and dangerous and if I lived in the area I should lock my doors and say inside I called my sister to warn her to lock the doors as we live in the Montrose area. My reason for telling Pippi the time my cellphone showed for this call was to show I agree with her the timeline from the paper doesn't seem to be right. How can this chase have taken all of 20 minutes, when it takes at least that much time for me to drive to Jefferson School; go in for my friend's daughter, gather her things, sign her out, get back into the car; then drive back toward South ORange Ave, go through the road blcok mess at Third Street; go down Montrose where we encounted the officer at Meadowbrook; then call my sister? Sheena, VIT, and Dave. Thanks! But you can leave the post. I kind of crossed the line myself; so if you want to un ban him it wouldn't bother me. Lot's of us post during the day. My schedule is just a little different then most people's. |

Well Chatterbox, I won't make the same comment to you I did to the other poster about 'I'll be nice,' because this time I won't. So, if Dave wants to ban me, I deserve it. Ever hear of 'hands free' calling? Or maybe I have OnStar? Which I don't; but... I wasn't moving when I called my sister; I was pulled over to the side of the road between Clark and Meeker, as I was when I called the paper. When I called Library Lady the first time my friend's child dialed the number for me and asked for LL. When she got on the phone, I pulled over to the side before I spoke to her. The second and third time I called LL from outside the stable. Taking into consideration there were children inside who might not want to hear what I was telling her. So as far as my being 'Irresponsible,' nope. You must have me mixed up with someone else. ' |

Is it MOL policy to not allow more than one account/screen name from the same ip addy? If not then I think it's wrong dave has made such public. If the guy's being a dick and the moderator deems he should be banned so be it, but why out him? If I choose to post under two names then maybe I would want to express myself in more than one way, maybe I don't want to seem too ambiguous, maybe I want to speak for more than one side without the question of being hypocritical--either way I'd have an expectation of privacy that can now be ruined just because someone has the ability to do so moderate the way you see fit but IMO, outing him was wrong |

maybe, but to each his own right? Even so, his info should still have been kept private. Like I said it's my opinion but with all the BS drama that goes on in these talk forums (whice BTW is rediculous) I could see someone wanting to make a valid point for more than one side of an argument without having to prove they were doing it genuinely and not just to start up. |

I was just giving some friendly, yet comical, advice on the proper steps that should be taken in the event of a snowstorm. I trust that the same rules apply to village hall employees when they post. Otherwise, I should probably inquire as to how I get my vacation days replenished. P.S. Does anyone know what the first ammendment is? |

Oh Boy! As much as I am sorry for starting this mess, I have to admit it is funny!!! Considering there are a lot of people who know who I am in real life, some who work in or would have reason to be in Village Hall daily, should I be concerned and start looking over my shoulder? Dave, I think you should at least PL me telling me who it is so I can take precautions, if need be that is. Then maybe I'll file a police report with the SOPD letting them know of my concerns. Once I make the police report, anyone who knows me in real life is free to visit SOPD for this 'public' information. They can then post the information, if they'd like!!! BTW I am just KIDDING!!! |
