Is there a good place in town for buffalo wings and beer? The hotter the wings, the better. |

Cluck U on So. Orange Ave. has great wings...really hot too. Don't know about the beers. |

no beer at Cluck U (or tables--takeout only); there's a liquor store a couple of storefronts down from it. St James Gate in Maplewood has wings on the menu, but I haven't tried 'em. Maybe Bunnie's or Gaslight?

Try The Landmark in Livingston. I think they have both. |

Well.. Cryan's has mild, hot, and Cryan's wings. The Cryan's is brings-tears-to-the-eyes hot. St James's Gate wings are pretty good too.. And, they both serve Guinness! |

Will, are you a true upstate-Buffalo-N.Y. wings fan? I went to college in wing country, I have fond memories of wings and beer, but... I haven't found a place where it's done right here. I order wings at every restaurant I see them on the menu. None of them stands out. I have read postings about Bunny's having some events with trays of wings being brought out. There's definitely beer involved. If you mean REAL Buffalo Wings, let me know when you find them. Cluck U might as well be Domino's wings. But they do have a spicy wing sauce that you have to sign a waiver to order. J.B.

JB, went to UofR - miss Sal's Birdland, The Distillery, and Country Sweet! Did you ever eat a "garbage plate"? Ahhh, youth...

Pdg, please elaborate on "garbage plate." Hey, that could be my haiku! Or part of it. J.B. |

My personal credo - never surprised, often disappointed - parallels my neverending search for good buffalo chicken wings with the following exception: I stumbled upon great wings at a semi-dive bar in Cranford known as Ye Olde Rathskeller. It's just off GSP exit 136 on Centennial. Guiness, Harp and the usual suspects are all readily available as well. |

The garbage plate was the worst but quite good after a hard night of drinking....if you could keep it down. |

Growler, still not quite specific enough. Let me try again. What food makes up a garbage plate? Hey wait a minute; I bet neither you or Pdg exactly remembers. You just know you ate one when you wake up the next morning. If that's it, then, yes I've had that. J.B. |

From what I remember it's a little bit of everything including some of the grease from the grease trap for flavor. Or maybe it was only the grease from the trap. You're right, I really don't rememeber. |

AH Sal's Birds! Fond memories. I went to UofR as well. Memories are a little fuzzy though due to the excesses of time and the excesses of beer. |

Okay, so I tried Cluck U because it's close to my house and I ended up needing takeout instead of eat-in. The "Thermonuclear" wings were impressively hot (tears, runny nose, etc.), though I didn't like the sauce as much BW3's (which, despite being a chain, has some pretty tasty wings). The Cluck U sauce reminded me of Cincinnati-style chili--a touch of cinnamon, maybe. I tried to order Cluck U's hottest wings ("911") but was told that the owner had decided not to sell them (I got the impression the place is under new ownership). Too bad. I was really looking forward to signing a waiver . . . Thanks for all the recommendations. Looking forward to trying some of the other places. |

That's so dumb. Why don't they have you sign the waiver, and just serve the stupid Thermonuclear sauce. They could charge twice as much and we'd all have gladly fallen for it. Sheesh, doesn't anyone know how to take advantage of drunk college kids (and nostalgic grown-ups) anymore? |

A Garbage Plate: 2 Red Hots or 2 White Hots or Two hamburgers (for the unadventurous) or 2 cheeseburgers or two italiab sausage patties (or steak, or an omlette, or any type of egg if it's a breakfast garbage plate) Put that on top of half a plate of hot homefries and half a plate of either cold baked beans or cold macaroni salad Top with onions that taste like they've been sitting in a bag for a week. Add mustard that is so strong it could wake the dead Ladel on top the grease and grizzle from the grill, which is collected in a large pot and kept warm on the griddle. Didn't go to U or R, but spent quite a bit of time there. Loved Nicks and I miss Sal's. There's nothing like a Bird after a weekend of partying. |

Rastro, not bad! I tried several times and gave up - the garbage plate just didn't translate well into words. Part of the experience was the local regulars on the other side of the diner. Maybe we just fooled ourselves with stories, but we found it fascinating/daring to eat next to "drug dealers and prostitutes". (And as I recall, it tasted good. We did go 1-2 times a month...in a certain frame of mind...) My better half also went to UoR and now is craving a plate like crazy. I keep saying "you can never go back..." JerseyBoy - you are right about remembering the next morning - the clothing you wore the night before would just reek. Now I think we may break into the kids' college funds... I think it would be best if they didn't go after all. |

Pdg, apparently they've changed things a bit since I used to swing by. Nick's closes at 6pm (???) and there are no longer hookers hanging out in the back lot. (oh joy) A friend who used to go there talked about the "triple threat". That is, going for three meals in a 24 hour period. Lunch was typically the toughest, since you can have breakfast and dinner after drinking, but drinking before lunch was tough work out during the school year. |

don't forget about the chili sauce ladled onto the garbage plate....and the fact that i was always told by the "locals" that you are supposed to shake it up in its styrofoam container to truly eat it in an authentic fashion. yum, actually makes me miss rochester |

I suggest O'Reiley's in Maplewwod. They have excellent wings on all levels of the spice scale. I'm not a huge fan of wings that put you in the hospital from the spiciness but if that's your taste, give O'reiley's a chance. They also have beer. Lots and lots of beer. A bunch of flat-screen TVs and a pool table. Did I mention the beer? If you want to travel just a few minutes further for great wings and great scenery!!!! Get yourself to HOOTER'S on 22 |

I've had the wings at O'Reillys. They were what a good friend called "snappy wings" - meaning they were not crispy and the skin was a bit undone-ish. Parrothead, you haven't had wings in Rochester (or Buffalo) right? |
