Today's Star-Ledger reports that Christy Davis Jackson, the former vice president of government affairs for the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, is the subject of a criminal investigation into UMDNJ, for operating a political slush fund. Jackson had been a lobbyist before her appointment to UMDNJ and the records show that one of her clients was Babyland. As discussed previously, Babyland purcahsed Dunhill Manor in 2004 for $250,0000 and then sold it to Saiyd for $500,000.

The question remains: Dunhill Manor had been purchased for $1 from the Village on the condition that it be used only to house seniors. How was it sold to Babyland for $250,000, without going back to the Village? Veritas - You seem to have the most knowledge about this, at least on the board. What kind of document spelled this out? |

On the Village’s website, under "Meetings" - “Recently Released Closed Session Minutes”, "June 9, 1997" there is this interesting bit of information: "IV- DUNHILL MANOR Village Counsel suggested that the Board dismiss the individual Directors as defendants from the lawsuit and proceed solely against the Corporation. The Board concurred with this recommendation." Feel free to visit: http://www.southorange.org/minutes/closed/1997-june-9.htm

This really seems like a smoking gun. This Babyland, with the $200,000+ salary it pays its director who is the mother of a Newark Councilwoman, seems in need of investigation itself. Pile on top of that the Dunhill Manor transactions which still require explanation by the village and Mr. Matthews, and you've got something which warrants investigation, IMO. |

It would seem that it should be referred to as Dunhill Manure. |

How will the FBI know about this if someone doesn't tell them? I suggest Spitz write a letter ASAP. |

The first step is the documentation stating that Dunhill Manure pile was being transferred for $1 on the condition it only be used for seniors. There are a couple of posters who have said this was the deal, but where was it doucmented? Was it a matter of public record, or a side agreement that wasn't recorded? |

And if it wasn't recorded, it seems it should have been, to protect the Village. Can anyone supply the details? |

I've gone back through previous threads and the most that I can find is a post that says "It seems that the Village sold the property for $1 on the condition that..." I had previously asked if the poster had the documentation. At least to me it seems that this is the first step. Without that, there doesn't seem to be much to go on. If somebody feels differently, then by all means produce the documentation. |

I don't know about the purchase of Dunhill Manor--if the house was bought from the Village, that was before my day. (I moved to SO 20 years ago and left 2 years ago.) But I do recall that in the late 1980's the Village used CDBG money to expand Dunhill Manor so that it could house more seniors and bring enough monthly rental income to keep itself going. |

With a $200,000 salary for its director, no wonder it needed additional government (aka taxpayer) funding. |

Focusing on the Babyland part of the transaction, there were some heavy duty players involved. Christy Davis Jackson was a lobbyist for Babyland. Christy Davis Jackson is married to the Reverand Reginald Jackson, arguably the most powerful and influential African-American in N.J. Christy Davis Jackson authorized the $10,000 contribution by UMDNJ to an unregistered charity headed by Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins, whose mother was the founder of Babyland and the executive director who was paid over $200,000. Other than the fact that the $10,000 contribution to Gayle Chaneyfield Jenkins' unregistered charity was wrong as admitted by the UMDNJ, there may be nothing more than a group of people who are very familiar with each other. How did Babyland get involved with Dunhill Manor? Was it sheer luck that allowed it to clear a profit of $250,000 in a very short period of time. Maybe so.

I'm glad we have a new Trustee who will use her power and position to get to the bottom of this.

Christy Davis Jackson also authorized contributions from UMDNJ to the politcial campaigns of Sharpe James, Newark Councilman Donald Bradley and the Essex County Democratic Party out of the political slush fund of UMDNJ. She has reimbursed UMDNJ. This is all part of investigation led by Chris Christie into illegal activities of UMDNJ. Where does anyone get the gall to think they can use funds of an institution funded in large part by taxpayer money to help finance the politicians who scratch their backs. At least Chris Christie stepped in to try to clean up this cesspool, |
