Afternoon Everyone, My first post. Oh joy! So many things to discuss about South Orange. However, for the moment, I have a rather simple question to ask of my fellow MOLers: Have any of you ever donated an old car to charity? When purchasing my new car recently, I didn't feel that a trade-in would really benefit anyone except for the dealer, so I held onto my old Ford, in the hopes that it may be donated to a worthy charity. However, after wading through seas of literature, I've found that simple "pick-up" services are not quite what they seem. Much of the money doesn't make it back to the charitable organization, for one thing. Some of them are outright scams, with no 501c3 status. I'd like to do the right thing here. But I also don't want to have to endure the process of selling my old clunker. I suppose that if even $100 were to make it back to the charity it would be worth it, but I'm wondering if anyone knows of a service that is a bit MORE beneficial to the charities? Any suggestions? Thanks for your help. |

How about selling it as a RR Station car and donating the proceeds? |

Yes, that's an idea, certainly. I would like to avoid having to sell the car myself though. The urgency is probably an issue: I'd like to give the car away within a week at most. So, that's an extra wrinkle. Also, I'd really like to give the car to someone who can't afford to buy a car. It would just make me feel better. |

Thank you. At least the Donation Line-run website (goodnewshome) gives the charity 80% of the sale. I'm not sure how much Cars for a Cure gives to ACS, but it's certainly a worthy cause. Thanks much! |

I donated a car to the National Kidney Foundation once, it was fairly easy procedure. However, I think the tax benefits of donating vehicles have been reduced in the last year or two. |

DO NOT donate to Charity Cars!!! About 3 months after donating our car we received a notice from the E. Orange PD stating that our car had been impounded and that we needed to pay the necessary charges to collect it! |

Yes Mantram. Thanks. I had read about their "practices" on the Better Business Bureau website. They're one of the biggies too. A terrible organization that claims to donate cars to needy families, but only donates 5% of them and pockets the rest of the money collected from the auction sales. None of the money goes to charity! |

TAX RULES FOR DONATING A CAR TO CHARITY HAVE BEEN REVISED TO YOUR RECEIVING A DEDUCTION FOR WHAT THE CHARITY RECEIVES ONLY, NO MORE, SO BEWARE OF SERVICES THAT POCKET MOST OF THE MONEY WITH LITTLE ACTUALLY GOING TO THE CHARITY. |
