Is this business yet again, out of business? When they were on Valley they had skittish hours -- when they were supposed to be open for business, they were always closed. Why can't they run a proper business with proper hours? I think having a candle shop in this area is a great idea, but in order to make money at it, you have to be OPEN! |

It could be because of the prices. Their candles (and soaps, etc.) were very nice, but quite expensive. Also, maybe not much foot traffic for candles.

I agree that the prices were a bit high, but the quality was very nice. I just think it's insane to have the same store in two different locations go under. Not such a great business plan. |

I just happened to arrive in The Village Cellar Restaurant(highly recommended-new chef)last night as the proprietor of The Candle Shop was leaving. She stopped by my table to say hello to my guest who is one of her customers. They had a lengthy discussion about her reasons for moving and it sounds as though they are moving again. Apparently they had some trouble with the help so try to show them some mercy everyone. My girlfriend seems very pleased with her purchases there. |

I'm sorry, but that place was never going to make it. Take a hard look at the location, (foot traffic someone said), expense, and business volume in the area. I'm surprised the chinese food place is doing good....be the food is ok. |

The "Great Wall" Chinese joint is good, and of course the "Reservoir" is great, so there's a bit of foot traffic in that area. "Jenny's Nail" salon is also a hot spot. But what these all have in common that "The Candle Shop" and that little shoe store that recently closed did not is regular hours and friendly service. That shoe store was awful. You'd walk in there and the one person in there acted as though she didn't care whether you bought something or not. The Candle Shop, although friendlier, was not much help to customers and as I said before, never kept normal hours. |

I buy my candles in the little candle shop all the time. Great candles and good prices. They are moving up to the location where laces was. |

Is their reason for moving in any way connected to the "coming soon" Saiyd Plaza, or the machinations between Saiyd and our esteemed Village President? Just curious. |

So moving the store up a few feet is going to provide them with more foot traffic and better hours? |

Kibbegirl: Perhaps you could ask her why she is moving and suggest she try to stay open longer hours. I have always found her very helpful and open to suggestions. |

mrosner, I would be happy to ask her that if I could ever get there and she was open! I don't have the time to go to a store, no kidding, 3x's in one week, and each time, they're closed! |

Good evening all, I'd like to personally apologize to anyone who may have been inconvenienced while trying to visit The Little Candleshop. Our first location at 106 Valley Street was new and exciting to South Orange/Maplewood and I agree; it definitely could have been better managed. To that effort, we moved to 116 W. South Orange Avenue and the move was well received! We made sure the candles and soaps you'd come to love were in abundance and the shop was open Wed-Sun, 12pm to 6pm regularly -- for two years! Due to the upcoming developments in this area, we moved to 108 W. South Orange Avenue where the hours are Thursday - Sunday, 10am to 5pm (a bit longer on Saturdays.) I'd love to see you again -- come have a complementary glass of wine with us -- we'd love to hear your suggestions. Relax. Light a Candle, Ray R. Gable, Jr.

Mr Gable- Could you please elaborate as to the "upcoming developments in the area." Perhaps you know more than our BOT's or Mr. Gross, who most recently dubbed the project "on hold." |

JayJay, I wish I knew! There is no clear answer as to when "it" is going to happen, but for the most part: * All the property from 116 W to the corner of Church street is being knocked down within 9 months or less. * There will be space for 8 businesses and approx. 20 condos above when the dust settles. * Everyone - business and residential - is looking to relocate at this point. So, with the lack of information and everything up in the air, we decided to move before we were forced to. Wish I could tell you more...

Ray Gable, thank you so much for your generous information regarding your store hours and also for providing us with a little bit of "background" information as to what's going on in our town. Will stop by soon to purchase your great products! |

The scent is mesmerizing. I drove all the way to Agostino in Red Bank for the one I have. Best of Luck in your new location!!! |

Love The Little Candle Shop. Big fan of the Gables' establishment (including little Ray Ray - though Sammy is sad he left for a different school). I usually hate scented things! Your stuff is very tasteful--and not really overpriced I think. See you in the new place. |

You know where to find me Ray

:-) No problem. I always wondered (as a student at seton hall and now living in town) why everything closed so early. Like Bagels Abroad - they close so early! Crazy. I would stop in there all the time on the way home for a sub or something if they were open.
