So now we can look forward to both Subways and Quizno's, and about 2 stores apart at that. Do they both expect to win? Plus, if Town Hall Deli ever gets built and the place opposite the train station becomes a deli, we will be over-sandwiched. Is this the vision Calabrese means when he talks of his vision for the town? Do we even have any design zoning criteria and standards for the exteriors of these places? Given the look of so many of the retailers, I doubt it. |

Subway is better. From a business standpoint, Subway has been ranked the #1 franchise since 2001 and has been within the top 10 for 14 out of the last 18 years. I am currently in the works to buy into the frachise and open a new location (not SO ) so I've got quite a bit of info on them. As far as Quizno's goes they're in big trouble, they didn't have a great business plan (read:greed) the father and son who own/owned it went a little crazy selling franchise options, they wound up have a ton of people who bought in but had no locations, they started to allow stores to open where business would not be good and many people who were waiting wound up loosing their rights (and investment $$) because they hadn't opened a location within a certain time period. They've since filed two class action suits against the company and the owners recently put the compny up for sale. From a food/taste standpoint I've tried both and tend to like Subway better, neither are the greatest cuisine but I do know that Subway uses good quality meats, new packs of veggies are opened daily (they're kept fresh in those airtight bags) and the bread is baked fresh every day. Sounds like I'm advertising, don't worry Dave, my location is about 60 miles from SO I do wish I had started the process earlier, I think SO is going to be a good one As far as being over sandwiched, I think there's a completely different client base for a place like Subway as opposed to Town Hall Deli, People are gonna go to town hall deli for old style subs (that's the best I can describe it). Subway or Quizno's have kinda like a fast food appeal, it'll be popular amongst the Columbia, middle school and Seton Hall crowds, plus the folks commuting can go for something that's fast (or at least has the feel of being done fast, I'm sure Town hall deli can make a sub just as quick but that's where the fast food appeal comes in). The SO Subway may also serve breakfast which will add a whole seperate set of customers. Time will tell |

SUbway better? That overly processed, mushed together "chicken loaf" and "turkey loaf"? IMO -- Quiznos is far superior to Subway -- much better meats, etc. I'd never set foot in Subway if Quiznos wa nearby. Although given a convenient nearby deli... /p |

Ace is mostly right. The Blimpie Base next to CHS will always have the loyalty (& rightfully so) of the students there, and SHU will just have to wait for the tapdancing Sean Flood to get his act together locally, but as one who regularly drives to E. Hanover for the outstanding sammiches at The Great Wazu, I'd rank 'em this way: Blimpie's is better overall, and Quizno's hot subs beat Subway's on the basis of both ingredients and bread. Speed of creation isn't much of an issue unless you're after a Sloppy Joe anyhow, so once THD reopens (while I'll still trek to TGW for my fave, a # 10 with cheddar), my bucks'll go to Mr. Tony @ Town Hall Deli. Good luck with your franchise, Ace. Where will it be??? -s. |

KMK- I think Subways is going into the prior Dawn Optician store on South Orange Ave. And Quizno's is a couple of stores up, I think on the other side of Sonny's bagels. There are "coming soon" signs in both windows. |

Quiznos(as my past few visits) doesn't allow you much room to adjust their subs if you want to change a cheese or add an additional topping...Subways are usually weak, depending on the owner operator? |

Both places make horrible subs, it's that simple. I once had to teach a subway employee how to make a chicken parm sub like it was completley foreign to them. I would gladly take a hot roast beef with provolone from Campus or a turkey and roast beef with swiss sloppy from THD. |

Does anyone really think McDonald's became popular because a high-quality gourmet burger??? It's the same with almost any franchise; you'll never get the same quality as a owner-operated operation. Is that bad? No, it just is what it is... |

I agree that he food isn't the greatest. It's not terrible but to be honest I don't really care, the place makes $$. Soda - Still trying to decide, There's an existing location in Warren County that I looked at but I wasn't too pleased with the North Jersey DA so I set up a meeting with a development agent just over the border in PA, their market is looking better but that would be a new location and it involves a LOT more effort for the first year.

I am happy both will be in South Orange and will be open past 7pm. I am a commuter and usually get home after 7pm and was a little disappointed to find out that a local sandwich wrap place closed at 7pm and the only other place where I could get something quick & cheap was takeout chineese food.

I just wish that the buildings, which will house both sub shops, looked nicer and had better facades. That way the new sub shops would fit in nicely from an asthetic standpoint. However, due to the way those particular buildings are kept up you know that both Subway and Quiznos will slap their logos up creating an even more disjointed feel to that row of retail. |

I have emailed Chipotle in the past about opening in SO and they told me that they would consider it if they received any interest from the town's residents . . . this may just be a "form letter" response . . . |

JTA - "Quiznos and Subway are too far from Columbia High for the students to go to for lunch..." I was talking about more about the age group but I used to hit the Mcdonald's on the parkway (union) when I was at Columbia. I don't think it's too far, although the fact that Blimpies is just about on the field won't help. |
