Looks like it's almost ready! It's about time. I thought the parking garage would be finished first. Jerry Tuttle www.SoOrangeNotary.com |

Is there an elevator? That works? I wish Mountain Station had Midtown Direct. |

The elevator is in the middle of the station, near First Street. It is the Second Street staircase that has been under construction for a while. |

The restoration of the train station - a hugely expensive undertaking - is one of the things the Village (if they had a role in helping bring it about, I assume they lobbied for it) IS doing right. VP Calabrese said the Village must be doing something right to attract new residents - the train station is truly one example of that. I would pay a similar compliment about the firehouse, except unlike the train station - which admittedly was spread over quite a bit of time - the firehouse has shown no progress recently. I hope they get the contractual matters resolved post haste. That is a project that is worthwhile, unlike so much that is happening and planned to happen near it.

The restoration is a NJ Transit project which is described on their website. http://www.njtransit.com/an_cp_project031.shtml And summarized here: The Morris & Essex station improvement and viaduct project encompasses the rehabilitation of the South Orange, East Orange and Brick Church rail stations and associated viaducts. After about 80 years of use, these historically significant stations and viaducts are in need of extensive structural repairs and waterproofing. In addition, the South Orange and East Orange Stations are key stations under NJ TRANSIT's Commuter Rail Accessibility Plan (see the "Rail System Improvements" section for more information on commuter rail accessibility and key stations). |

Work was also done recently at Mountain Station. I thought I heard Midtown Direct might be stopping there more often in the near future. I hope so. |

I understood that it was a NJ Transit project...I think the sign in the station says the project (all 3 stations) is about $23mm. I'm trying to give some credit (if any is due) for any lobbying that may have gone into making the project happen. Credit probably rests with our former Acting Governor and neighbor in W. Orange, not our Village Hall, but I'm trying to be generous and to point out the types of projects that are worthwhile. I appreciate you clarifying that it is a NJ Transit project for others (because I was not clear). Knowing NJ Transit is the sponsor is important in comparing the progress of the train station vs. the firehouse. It may not have gone as quickly as some would have liked, but the station has moved steadily and is nearing completion and, to my knowledge, was never stopped due to a contract problem - unlike the firehouse and numerous other projects around town that have been started but not completed.

SO1969...LOL! Unless you live right by the tracks. Which, thanks to the construction leads to train horns at all hours of the day and night. But, save for that, I'm in agreement. |

Any time a project like this takes twice as long as the Empire State Building, it's discouraging. |

NJ Transit first approved the current project in 1992. I don't know when it was first discussed. It took over ten years for them to actually fund it. We have invited them to meetings at least once a year since I have been on the board. Each year we have asked them about this project among other things. The most discouraging thing about the project is they have now decided to curtail most of phase three. So the interior is not just getting a paint job instead of a renovation. The concrete railing is being left alone instead of being restored. The trestle on third street has been pushed off for who knows how long. We can only push them but NJ transit only reacts when there is a lot of negative publicity. I suggest everyone email them to help prod them into really finishing the inside of the station.

Is there any way to restore the fake (or real) ivy on the side of the trestle over South Orange Ave? I think the cracked & crumbling trestle looks terrible. |

The ivy can be restored, but I would like to see NJ Transit finish working on the trestles (All of them - S. Orange Ave, Third Street, etc) |

Everone in South Orange, upon waking in the morning, should face in the direction of N.J. Transit headquarters and thank them for saving South Orange. |
