I find it very ironic that the topic name for Maplewood has a subtitle "Related to Local Government," but actually has much more diverse threads such as "when are the streets cleaned" and "which school is the best"; whereas, the South Orange topic rarely has anything BUT local government threads.

I think South Orange residents are in the bitter barn.

In all seriousness, I have learned a lot as a new resident from the government-related threads; (thanks!) but I do wish there was more thread diversity.

If your downtown looked like South Orange's with the taxes we pay - you would be in the "bitter barn" as well. (and I won't even mention the fact that a large portion of the town doesn't have potable water)

How is "when are the streets cleaned?" not related to government?

And "which school is best?" should technically be in the Education thread, no?

That said, clearly Maplewood's governing body has done more to satisfy its residents than South Orange has.

For some relief from the negativity I check out the "Virtual Cafe" or "Arts & Entertainment" and I always check out "Home Fix-it" and "Please Help" to try and help others and learn something myself. I find they relate to South Orange as much as Maplewood and are informative and interesting.

Jenny, I agree with you that it would be nice to have additional threads. In a town that likes to hype itself as a lover of art, for example, I wonder why there aren't threads about any of the arts. Who knows?

I guess, PDG, I was referring to the informative nature of those topic threads, although I'm sure you're right, that both do refer indirectly to the government.

I do frequent many of the other threads (Food/Travel, Please Help, etc.). I think my reason for posting was more an observation about the difference between the Maplewood and South Orange boards regarding focus.

Maplewood was created and named that way because local topics were mixed into the Soapbox. The SO topic was created at the same time. I suppose "related to local government" could be used for SO, too.

It is a classification, cross referencing issue, Dave. Art discussions about things specific to SO might be different from other art discussion groups. I will check out the one you referenced, though.

It's a messageboard, not a wiki. There will always be topics that could be in multiple areas.

Dave, I never heard of that before. Here's a link for others who asked, "What is wiki?"

In a larger sense, MOL is a "group blog". Doing all the things that blogs do, before people were talking about blogs.

Nohero-
MHD was making a reference to a comment one of South Orange's BOT members' made last week about MOL.
