After speaking with a friend of mine about yesterday about the TS statue mess it got me thinking about some things she told me. Maybe someone here knows the answer. Is there any way after Mrs A and her group spoke with Tony Smith's family they were under the impression they convinced the family to donate a statue? That it wasn't until much later Mrs A and her group didn't realize the family had only given the group permission to use the plans to fabicate a statue? |

It's possible, but then why would they wait so long to convey that fact and why wouldn't they say that at any of the recent public meetings? Yet another reason to hold off and gather bona fide public input based on ALL of the facts. |

JTA, Nice thought, but unfortunately not the case. http://www.southorange.org/minutes/2002/11252002r.htm Monday, November 25, 2002 ... What the gift will mean is that we will be responsible for covering all costs associated with fabricating, transporting, installing, siting, insuring and conserving the sculpture. Our estimate for these costs is $250,000. The site is on Sloan Street in front of the train station, where a gazebo and fountain now stand. ... The Board agreed to include the sculpture in the application for CDBG funds |

MHD, to clarify, they must have meant that their estimate for the taxpayers' costs associated with the gift are $250,000, because MRosner has posted with detailed breakdown of the projected costs associated with all those things, totalling $410,000. Which leaves the $160,000 that the sculpture committee says they will raise from private donors. (BTW, did anyone get an invite to the gala that Sheryl mentioned at the last BOT meeting? I didn't. I haven't seen one whit of fund raising efforts for the statue. I'd be much more confident that they could raise the funds if efforts to do so were more inclusive and visible.) |

pdg, Thanks for the clarification. I agree that the total costs are now at least $440,000. (However, back in 2002, it appeared that the estimates for the total costs would only be $250,000) I had known about the "gala" back in 2002 from Eric DeVaris, but I have not heard of a single other attempt at fundraising in the past 4 years. (and now $130,000 must be raised in 6 months) |

I'm pretty sure the woman at the BOT meeting said something about a big gala in, I think, May 06. She said something like they couldn't do any real major fundraising until the project was "real" and the town was committing to put money behind it, etc. And the way she mentioned the upcoming gala implied that THAT would begin the serious fundraising. I imagine it will be a black tie, $X hundred/thousand dollars a plate dinner dance type thing. I could be completely wrong, of course, which is why I asked to see if anyone knew anything about it. |

But, MHD, as for the "now $130,000 must be raised in 6 months" you speak about. Didn't you pay attention? Mrs A was very firm in her statment they will have no problem raising the money in six months. At least that's the sense I got from her response to MG's questions about raising the money. (or was it the other gentleman who asked?) |

JTA, I just remember hearing Ms. A say she had a solid fundraising plan that she would share with the public, but then she never did. |

And didn't she also say that people could "make an appointment" to see the site design. MAKE AN APPOINTMENT? Who's paying for this thing anyway? It should be on public view somewhere...library, village hall, train station are a few possible spots to post it. |

You know, jayjay, you're right. That was a little off-putting and sounded like it was still a private thing. It should be put on public display. p.s. - Residents have to make an "appointment" to see how their $250,000 is being spent. Note to taggers - tagging with appointment only. p.p.s. - This is good material for a MHD post. The discussion of which department the taggers have to call could be discussed by the BOT for at least four meetings, and then the sub-committess have to meet. |
