Nuff Sayid, what is SOMACOM or COM? I found her article interesting in many respects, but you are right that she does not adequately appreciate democratic process with 1700 signatories to the petition. |

The duck pond was my idea and I'm sticking to it. I actually like the sculpture and think that a walk around the duck pond would allow it to be easily viewed from every angle. I don't like the Grove Park idea. If the thought it to bring people into S. Orange to spend some stroll and shop dollars and dine in town, IMO Grove Park is too far removed. Personally, I continue to be perplexed by the TSSC & supporters ignorance. 1700 residents (nearly half the number of voters in the last election) indicated that they did not want to spend tax dollars on TAU. There is a huge difference between spending tax dollars on art and LYING about spending tax dollars on art. THAT is the issue. THE PROCESS is the issue. It has nothing to do with the art. Why can't they grasp that simple fact? |

Anyone notice the News Record printed an "article" for 3 consecutive weeks about the bus trip to see the fabrication of Tau on Monday? I wonder if that was a paid advertisement or not since it appeared 3 times in the paper. Also, with such exposure, I wonder how many people are actually going on this trip. Anyone? |

How about a very slowly rotating platform in the middle of the duck pond? Each time you went to the pond, you'ld see it from a slightly different angle. I don't like the Grove Park idea either, btw. I don't think anyone would venture that far from the town center more than once, if at all, to see it. It would seem that if Valley Street is being considered for a renewal of whatever magnitude, Tau could be a focal point if the planners were directed to consider it. Perhaps along Third Street, nicely landscaped, visible from the train and from Valley St, and from the parking/walking areas there. I'd rather see Tau than what remains of the gas station on the corner of 3rd and Valley.

i want to go on the field trip to see the Breakers! isn't that the Vanderbilt estate? one of the two heirs of that mansion was at my wedding. (he gave me a salt and pepper shaker from pottery barn, not that i needed anything more than a $15 gift, just thought it was a little out of touch with reality). Okay, that was a major thread drift. sorry! |

Hey, I just had a thought. How about siting Tau somewhere on the grounds of Seton Hall? They have an art history department as well as a gallery. The pro-Tau people get what they want - a site where lots of people pass by in a South Orange location. I wonder why no one ever consulted the art history dept. of Seton Hall on the project from the start. Its like they are not even a part of the town. I think its a symptom of the elistist approach of those who profess to be pro-art, but only if its art as they want it on our dime. |

jayjay, Important clarification - Everyone is pro-Art. THEY are pro-higher-municipal-taxes-for-art. Most people are not, when essential government services are not addressed first such as when the library has a leaking roof, Village Hall is crumbling, roads are in disrepair and government spending is already out of control. |

Speaking of out of control spending, I remember that at the last BOT meeting a gentleman spoke during remonstrances and asked the entire board, and Mr. Gross and Mr. Matthews what was the total amount of debt S.Orange had accrued to date. He asked this after they had all unanimously voted to float another bond to pay for a bunch of stuff (I believe including the additional millions to loan to SOPAC). He then rightly expressed disgust that not one person had even asked or seemed to consider the total debt of the town BEFORE agreeing to vote to increase it. I think he then suggested that it was close to $66 million, but not one person could confirm or deny that number! I wonder if he ever did receive an accurate answer... |

Excellent point, Pdg. It appeared when he asked it, if any trustee, the village administrator or town counsel knew the total debt of the town, not one of them was going to admit it and say what it was on camera. Then again, perhaps not one of them knew. I doubt he has received an answer but I also would love to know if he did. $66 million and rapidly rising is pretty incredible for a $26 million operating budget. The town should be building up various endowment and rainy-day funds, not hurling itself into rapidly increasing amounts of debt. Several new trustees would be needed for that, however. |

There were 2 more Letters to the Editor in yesterday's News Record rebutting the false information & personal attacks issued by the sculpture people, which have now been added online at http://www.geocities.com/theunofficaltonysmithproject/Editorials.pdf |

Why would Seton Hall want a copy of what Hunter College has itself, the original Tau? |

MHD - are you so bored in the absence of BOT meetings that you've relegated yourself to googling 'bowel movements' in your spare time?

It's art, not a bowel movement. Tau is also art. The board's secretive and misleading tactics are a massive bowel movement. Thar she blows!!! jd |
