I was amazed that NOBODY called in to the test of the call-in remonstrances on Monday night. I THOUGHT I heard Trustee Devaris provide 2 different phone numbers, though. Did anybody TRY to call-in? I think it's an interesting concept & hope people who don't like public speaking will at least give it a try. |

MHD - You were correct. First off 973 378 7715 was given and we were told to dial extension 2234, then upon repeating, we were told to dial extension 2238......

Next time it's 2242, then 2246, this is just to confuse us!

VG, DeVaris gave two different numbers but I don't think he wanted to confuse us. So far he's made every effort to open up communications with the government, why would he do that. He obviously goofed. The extension flashed on the screen was 2238, so that must have been the right number.

Mary, Mary, Sarcasm, read between the lines here! I don't Think for a moment think Mr. DeVaris was trying to misled us, it's just that like everything else here, there's always apparent lack of correct information. |

So, now that "Call-in Remonstrances" are available - who is going to try it tonight? Have a fear of public speaking? Don't feel like sitting through a four hour meeting? Outraged about the Tony Smith sculpture, but can't get a babysitter? Have a concern about SOMETHING in town? DO SOMETHING and call-in your concern TONIGHT! From the Village website: http://www.southorange.org/articles.asp?articleID=130 Call-In Remonstances at Trustee Meetings “Call-in Remonstrances” is a part of the new initiative by the Board of Trustees the “Two-Way Communications Program between the Public and the Board of Trustees”. One part of the Program, the “Neighborhood Meetings” began last February with the first meeting attended by more than 100 residents. Call-in Remonstrances is designed to facilitate interactive communications with the Trustees during the public BoT meetings for any resident who, for any reason, cannot attend the meetings. Here’s how it works: 1) In the beginning of each meeting the Village president will announce the time when incoming calls will be received. 2) During that time slot (15 minutes) residents can call 973.378.7715 extension 2238; an answering device will record their question or comment, which will be addressed by the BoT during the remonstrances. Residents will have two minutes to record their message, after which time the recording will be interrupted. 3) Callers must give their full name, address, and telephone number. 4) The question or comment of the caller will be played through loudspeakers in the Meeting Room so that the BoT and the public can hear the question. A response will be given publicly by the BoT. Since this is a new technological experiment there may be some bugs that must to be cleared, so callers may need to be patient in the beginning. This new feature in two-way communications is for people who cannot leave their home on meeting nights, e.g. senior citizens, young parents without babysitter, late-night workers, etc. Residents who are able to come to the meetings are encouraged to continue doing so, so that call-in remonstrances may be available to those unable to attend the meetings.

The only problem I have with this is you have to give your phone number. Something you don't have to do at the meetings. BTW -Do you want that packet of information I picked up from my friend? It's in my car. |

Also, it isn't really two-way communication when you hang up and don't get to respond if the trustees brush you off, answer the wrong question, or generally tell you that you just don't understand the vision. Given the tenor of most trustees answers to things with which they do not agree, my hopes for this are modest. I'd be more interested if I got to be on the line live while they answered me. Maybe I'll call in anyway, if I manage to hit the magic 15 minute window in question. Why is this slot so narrow? |

Susan1014: At one point, I think we do hope to go to true interactive. The 15 minute time frame was a starting point.

Apparently the rules were changed tonight and this is ONLY going to be used ONCE per month at the "Regular Meeting" on the 4th Monday of every month. |

Actually, the rules did not change. When the committee first met and when we first announced, we said only at the regular meeting for the first few months (usually on the fourth monday). |

Take 2 (or is it three)! Let's see if the Call-in remonstrances work tonight.... Got a gripe or concern and can't get a babysitter. Sickened by the proposed 13% tax increase? Outraged by the spending of over $250,000 for a sculpture and being lied to about it? Disgusted by the nonexistent redevelopment? Stunned that nobody knows who the supermarket operator is? Then - call it in! |

Joel, You were very right. That was a total waste of time. 3 callers: 1) Status of Beifus? - He's fixing the buffer between the site & the pool. No update on "construction". 2) A Member of the Sculpture committee calls to say she loves the idea of having the sculpture. Shocking! 3) Status of Sayid? - He has to let the town know what his intentions are. When? Who knows. Status of Supermarket Operator? - It may or may not be John Choi. Announcement to be made within 2 weeks.

I believe Choi is out of the picture, from listening to convoluted answer to your question. Attending the meetings allows you to see the mannerisms of certain persons of interest when they fudge or worse. Did anyone notice when Abrams told Rosen that the VPres has the power under the charter to introduce resolutions the Friday before a meeting, and that the seven or eight resolutions to be voted upon were so introduced, (Gross seconded her explanation), and Calabrese told us that he had nothing to do with the resolutions? One seems to transfer authority over some function from the BOT to the Planning Board, as best I could tell, but since there were no handouts, I could not follow the transfer of power. Does anyone know what that was. jd |
