Has construction begun again on the firehous, as Mr. Matthews said it would ("in the next couple of days")? |

It has been *three* years this month. Can someone please respond? Edited to three years after I found this: http://www.southorangevillage.com/cgi-bin/show.cgi?tpc=65301&post=79452#POST79452 |

Here's what I have learned: The firefighters were asked to vacate the firehouse as of 4/27/02. Today there is a "new" construction company doing work, which is good news. It is all the news I could get from my anonymous source. The firefighters may not speak with the press or the public about the firehouse per strict personnel policies put in place by the previous Village Administrator. They take this very seriously and fear losing their jobs so they are very careful with their words. The only approved contacts for the public/press are Captain Sullivan or Chief Markey, who were not available when I called. For some unknown reason, the News-Record never includes information regarding the hard work done by South Orange's dedicated Firefighters, as they do for Maplewood's Fire Dept., because there is a policy in place not to release those details. I, for one, thank God for our brave firefighters who stand ready to risk their lives for my family and home! It's beyond shameful that they have been cramped into rented trailers for so long and I look forward to the day they are comfortably in the finished firehouse where they should have been months ago!

Pdg, at the March 27th BOT meeting, Village Attorney Ed Matthews stated that work would begin again at the Firehouse "in the next couple of days". I'm not around during the day, and I walk home in the other direction so I am curious if, ten days later, anything has actually started. |

Wow - I can't believe I cited a link that disproved my edit for correctness. I'm obviously way too distracted to participate in South Orange Specific for awhile and should stick to Virtual Cafe! Thanks for the information that work has begun. I certainly hope it continues to a speedy and satisfactory completion. |

It was also said at the meeting that everything for the firehouse has been paid for/there is all the proper funding in place. This is news to me. Here's a short story. When we did SHU500 and were looking at charities to donate the proceeds to from the dunk tank, etc - I got information on the firehouse and the budget. From last August - it was very much so not paid for and not even close. I have the budget breakdown somewhere. I'll add that all the money may have been raised and put in place since then, but I don't remember it being discussed at any of the meetings so I can't be 100% sure. I think it was said at the BOT meeting that it has nothing to do with financing but rather union issues... Trustee Rosner or Trustee DeVaris - could you possibly clarify? |

Sheena: The funding has been in place for quite some time. The issue has to do with the contractor failing to meet his contractual deadline. I will not be able to post or discuss any specifics since it is now a legal issue.

to keep people from flying off the handle about the status of all the incomplete or not-yet-started projects, maybe there should be an update on the projects posted on the town website at least once per month. getting bad news is one thing, but getting NO news is worse. |

SOSully, will you do anything if your suggestion does not happen or it is used to provide no real information? |

SOrising: I am permitted to make a suggestion without your snide retort. Trustees read this forum and are capable of accepting a suggestion. Thanks for the useful feedback. |

A monthly status report would be helpful and welcome, but there is no good answer for why development has dragged on for so long on all of these projects. It's been half a decade, and the type of work currently stalled was outlined in the 1979 Master Plan (more residential & commercial development downtown, better parking, facade improvements, etc). That was almost 30 years ago. |
