Just curious, which agency / person is responsible for re-painting the handicapped parking spots in front of South Orange Middle School? The signage & curb cut are still there, but when the county/state started repairing Ridgewood Road, the spots disappeared. Do I complain to the county, the town, the Board of Ed, the police dept, parking authority, or someone else? Thanks! |

Yes there is, however the space identifed for it is extremly small. I was there tonight for the SOMS school play with my folks, who do require handicap parking and while I drove and dropped them off to go look for a spot, I noticed a very small space under the handicap sign. Since my dad's car is small, I was able to get it in there, but if he had to park it, I'm not sure he would have been able to. I think it needs looking into as SPW indicated.

Yes, I know there is a SIGN for one, but no indication as to the actual location of the spot. The pavement / curb used to be painted blue, etc, but since they tore up the road and re-did the curbs, nothing has been repainted. I'm not sure if the spot is technically one car length north of the sign, one car length south of the sign, or both! |

Sorry Vermont Golfer, I guess we were posting at the same time. Last time I was at SOMS, about two weeks ago, there were no blue markings on the pavement/curb to indicate the handicapped space. When there are cars parked/lined up in front of the middle school, I'm never sure of the amount of space allotted for the handicapped space, since there are no markings at all, delineating the parallel parking spaces. I wish they would paint actual lines to mark off the spots there.

SRW, You are correct, there is no clear indication of where or how big the spot is. Frankly, the jerks who parked on either side of the sign, couldn't have thought that someone who could legally park there could have ever fit between them. I think Ridgewood is a County road, so I guess it lies with them.

If it was me, I would call SOPD or village hall and try to find someone who knows. Parrot head, do you know who to contact about road issues? Maybe the people responsible for SO roads would know who to contact about county roads? Is Ridgewood actually a county road? Seems to me there's a similar problem by the post office, where there's a sign and a curb cut, but no (or faint) lines. |

The same issue with the extremely faded lines at the disabled spot opposite starbucks. I have seen people ticketed for parking there in the dark hours (winter about 6.30-7pm) and at the same time I was seeing people crossing over the double lines to park and they were ignored! surely, repainting/highlighting the disabled spots will stop a lot of peole from parking there, a lot innocently who did not see a notice/the lines, and more importantly the people who can legally use these spaces will feel that the town is once again CLEARLY marking them for their use. A can or two of paint can't cost a lot... |

Not trying to butt in on local topics, however this is what my job is (in the region of Australia where I live) - addressing issues of inclusive access in all aspects of community life. We have anti-discrimination laws federally and in each State which must mesh with national building and construction codes and standards. These dictate the size of each accessible parking bay, its access to pavements, its safety in regards to road/vehicle considerations as well as other pedestrians, how each bay is signed (we use road surface painting AND signposting for a bay), etc. There is usually someone located at the local Town Council who will facilitate speedy repainting or redesignating when necessary, as well as a Road Safety Committee and a Community Safety Officer. We will usually write to all of these at the same time so that 'all' of Council is involved. When all else fails, write to the Mayor and they will delegate to appropriate personnel. We are also running with the national Inaccessible/Unacceptable campaign involving large stickers and notices to be slapped on offending vehicles, signs, buildings etc. If you need any, pls PL me and I'll pass on info and/or templates. Good luck! |
