Who the heck chose that 1960's NYC public school green color inside the train station? Ugh! It must be the cheapest paint they can find. I guess this is a NJ Transit issue? |

You know something SOSully it is most likely NJT but it is also the towns Govt lack of involvement issue. You can ask and I have asked about this and I got the standard it is not in our control. Well I am sure that if the BOT had spoken with NJT and asked that we have someone from the town give input into what is going to be done with the train station they would have listened. There are thousands of people who use that station daily mostly residents of SO. I was told the reason they painted the benches instead of stripping the wood and re staining them was budget cuts. If you take a moment and really look at this station it could be absolutely beautiful. A massive window in the center. It could be one of the stations that exists that becomes a centerpiece for the town. The front stone plant boxes that are attached to the station should be overflowing with plant and flowers. Another issue. I am sick and tired of looking at that sign stuck in the flower bed in front of the station that says that the train station has been adopted by the Jespy house. They have done absolutely nothing to maintain the appearance of the station. This sign should be torn down. It has become a toilet for pigeons and an ash tray. Absolutely disgusting. We deserve better. |

I have to agree. I was stunned to see that they simply painted over those benches (with light-colored paint no less). They will look awful in short time. The train station is a beautiful piece of architecture. It's hard to imagine that the town would just leave its restoral to people whose only concern is saving money. |

Maybe we can find a "sponser"/organization that would be acceptable to NJT that would be responsible for maintaining the station. This is our "Focal Point". |

NJ Transit had originally promised to restore the station. They were supposed to make it look the same as when it first opened. Last fall, without notifying the public, they cut the funding for what was referred to as phase 3 of this project. They took some elements to phase 3 and added it to phase 2. The bottom line was at that point they said they would be making superficial repairs to the interior as opposed to a complete renovation. The colors were supposed to be whatever colors were originally used. I think the green was one of those colors but I am not sure they got the right shade. NJ Transit did at one time meet with the state historical society in coming up with the designs (interior and exterior). They have been to several meetings at village hall (in public ) over the years. For the most part, they have ignored most requests and comments from the BOT and the public. They do react to pressure. The more people who email them (and you can do so thru their website - www.njtransit.com) the better. I would also suggest you cc the village so they realize the complaints are not only going to them but to the elected officials. One of the positives that came from pressure was the station is now open all hours and the ticket booth is open on weekends. To me, that was a major improvement.

Mr. Levison I would think that $2500.00 would buy some really nice boxwoods and summer flowers that would look really nice in the planters around the train station entrance. They do very well in our climate and would stay green all year. It would definitely improve things. And Mr. Rosner you are correct the opening of the station office on weekends is a plus but how sad is it that this is something we had to ask for. I find it upsetting that we are happy that the improvement made is pure customer service. These people are right this station could be absolutely beautiful and it is not. We should not settle for this.

Good idea, Mark. But I must say that I've not yet heard the BOT even mention the train station, though I've watched scores of meetings. I don't know what other renovations NJT is undertaking, but I can't imagine this station wouldn't be at the top of their list. It's a beautiful structure with striking possibilities. |

They react to pressure. How reassuring that a governmental agency reacts to pressure. Imaging what 250K from town would buy us in station restoration. National recognition, beauty, comfort, and much money left over for hiding the gutted shop-rite site from passing commuters, and downtown patrons. jd |

There is no doubt that once completed the station is going to look much better. But painting the benches instead of stripping and re finishing them is short sided. It will need to be re painted in a year. As far as the paint colors sometimes it is better to form your opinion once the entire job is complete. But there is no excuse for the conditions of the front of the station. |

Joel the town should not fund the station restoration. But the town Govt should send a message that the current situation is not acceptable. I remember months back I complained to Mr. Rosner about the crowd that was created for the 8:22 because of the shortened station. The last 5 cars of the train were stopped behind the construction causing a huge pileup. Mr. Rosner within days and I mean within days had a supervisor from NJT meet him on the platform to show him the problem and find a solution. So my point is if John Gross wanted to he could do something about this. If he accepts the current situation for HIS town we will have the current situation for our town. I take the train every day of the week and I am in town all the time. Has anyone ever seen John Gross in or around the train station? |

JoRo: NJ transit was hear last year (at my request) and I asked them specifically about the interior renovations. They have to come to BOT meetings at least once a year since I have been on the BOT. This station is now the second busiest on the M & E Line. Over 2,200 commuters. It should be at the top of their list. I don't mind the green paint, but I think painting the benches was not acceptable. We will invite them again. Joel: I don't think every thread needs to be turned into a discussion about the Sculpture. Plus, NJ Transit has stated in the past they can not accept funds from a municipality nor will they allow us to tell them what to do with the station. They will accept comments and take them under advisement. |

Mark: The shop-rite site is an eyesore, every day. That is a fact. So is Beifus, and Sayidistan. When will you just state, loud and clear, that you are fed up to here, and not going to take it anymore? You are the only one able to see the forest from the trees. Speak up, and don't give up. How many years, and how many more lies, must you endure? JD |

Mark's comment above that SO is now the second busiest on the M & E line, with over 2,200 daily commuters, raises a question that I don't think has been addressed before. If one of the purposes of being a transit village, which is the rationale for building more residential units within one-quarter mile of the station, is to encourage more people to be able to walk to the station, how are all these additional commuters going to be accomodated. I don't think it was anticipated that the midtown direct would attract so many new residents to purchase homes in the residential areas, because of the proximity to NY. |

Spitz please do not change the direction of this thread. Very good point but make a new thread. This train station is a beautiful building and should be restored properly.

daniel d - You're right. It belongs in a separate thread. I'm with you on the train station. Maybe a volunteer group could work in cooperation with Jespy House in keeping up the appearance of the station on the outside. Volunteer groups have done this in other towns - e.g., litter pick-up, etc. |

Thanks Spitz...If we could get the funding for the plants I would buy them and plant them myself. Personally I am not a big supporter of groups or committees....I find there to be too much B.S. and no work gets done. I am talking about the cement planters that are built into the front of the train station. There is one to the right and left of cait and abby, one in front of the station and one to the left. These could look beautiful!!! Boxwoods or something similar that would thrive year round would work nicely. I would need the town to remove the dirt that is there now and replace it with new soil. Dubrows for the plants....a couple hours of planting and done. But the town would have to water regularly especially in the beginning. This is most important. And I have a good friend that is very creative and I am sure this person would help me to plan it and get it done! If there is a trustee reading this please let me know if it is possible to get the funding and I will work on a cost needed to get it done. Now is the time to do this as we are getting very close to planting season. thanks dand

What is really annoying: the paint on the south bound staircase already is grafittied up. It just makes me sick. Can't the kids who do this find some other activity, i.e. reading a book, |
