I "borrowed" Artnet.com's photo of the Tau in NY and removed our gazebo. That Tau has been stripped of paint. We'll no doubt have to repaint ours too, so we'll see it like this at times. The link to the original photo is: http://artnet.com/Magazine/reviews/walrobinson/robinson8-2-16.asp

nice job, Bailey. I think that looks like the right scale. I can now certainly see how that will draw hoards of tourists to our town. |

Attractive? No...Mimimalism never is, really. In sculpture, at least, it was not the goal. The gazeebo, on the other hand, is simply useless. I walked by it the other day thinking Why the Heck did someone spend the money erecting a gazeebo, with no benches underneath, and no protection from the birds. The only use the gazeebo has is to provide bird housing and plenty of nasty crap on the sidewalk, or the head if you're not careful. I can already see my kids running around the Tony Smith, playing hide and seek, and happily avoiding bird poop. (Hey, I'm just trying to look on the bright side.) |

Well, it looks like a huge pidgeon perch and toilet to me, Shanbana, an incredibly hideous one at that. Benches could be added to the gazebo at far less than this will cost. |

Way cool. (before Dave got his hands on it) But wait, wasn't Gil Gazebo also a world-famous South Orange son? -Bringing his unique vision for little outdoor shelters to only a few select communities? (and don't forget Fred Fountain) Tau goes the battle? You guys should feel so very very ordinary. -Maplewood is getting some highly exclusive and special Astro Turf, -we shall be the (green with) envy of all the art world! And we only had to somehow raise $1.6 MILLION to get it! (it would have cost even more but sadly it is not part of a limited edition). _______________________________ Frankly, I'm not the least bit surprised at much of the anger of some of S.O. residents over this proposal. I used to think that it was just because so many other things on the Ave have been F'_d up for so long. -However I've come to the conclusion that the truth is because although a lot of towns and people love to pay lip service to being "cultured" and "active in the arts" and to think of themselves in that regard, most people when it really comes right down to it just want pretty things that "match" or at least something that in their view is "entertaining". -And they sure as Hell don't want to PAY for anything else. If anyone doubts that, you have merely to check the "arts" section of the the very artful NYTimes, -It is daily, almost always about TV and movies. -So be it. People be people. |

oh my god - i thought it was at least a statue of a person or something - what the hell is that? It is ugly - and kind of looks like an ad for commerce bank - are the going to color it red? Why would they put such a big hulking piece of nothing there? Why not something pretty? happy? |

That's hysterical: -"Why not something pretty? happy?" Too much. No, Perfect. Did I forget to mention that "comedy" is also part of the arts? Perhaps they will erect a giant 20' Irish Drum as a tribute to another of South Orange's favorite sons. |

It looks different from different angles. It's a nice piece, but it doesn't belong on Sloan and it shouldn't be billed to taxpayers after all the lies and budget bloat. |

Take the Ms. Pac-Man machine out of Bunny's and put it under the trestles. Villagers would only need to pump in a couple million quarters to fund this art project.

I think I see Tau in a different light - it completely reminds me of The Glerp - a book I used to read to my son. What's interesting about the Glerp is that it eats everything in its path until it gets so bloated and distorted that it can't move anymore. Ultimately, it has to spew it all up to right itself.

Steel - put whatever you want, with your money, in your house. If you want to donate it to a public space (I mean a real donation) and there is a public body willing to accept it, do so. Bailey - would you mind posting a few "before" shots of the gazebo? Different angles, if you have them. I think the juxtaposition will be useful for any trustees who are having second thoughts. I hope the happy gazebo photos don't overwhelm steel. |

I wish to apologize to all who were offended by my description of tau as welded metal. It seems some were offended by my harsh words, and my brazen repetition of them. Now, I see that here, in South Orange, the artist has matched the early twentieth century architecture of the train trestle and station with his mid-twentieth century welded metal thing, and that all is well. Who needs a gazebo and fountain, when a large metal shape is available for the asking, or, for a half million dollars. jd |

I'm totally into the commerce bank atm inserted into the Smith. It does fit, provides shelter from birds, and I won't have to drive to Union anymore! Also, pinpoints the fact that minimalism has basically become corporate art. Usually best installed in one of those "public spaces" between corporate highrises. Not in downtown South Orange. |

And just think, with a $2 transaction fee, we only need the ATM to be used 250,000 times to pay for the whole thing. (that's ONLY 23 times each day for 30 YEARS!) |

We bought for 500K a "gift" from the copyright holder, the estate of a lesser known artist. We have a permit to pay a metal welder to copy it, so long as we place it where some offspring of the artist demands it be situated. So, the 100K gazebo will be destroyed, as will the fountain. You are looking at another copy, probably of the one at Hunter College, transposed via Adobe Photoshop to the site of the gazebo. Yes, it is ugly. jd |

I don't think it is ugly, but I don't think it fits in where the VB and, apparently, the heirs want it. Sloan Street has been all done up to be "traditional", Tau certainly isn't traditional, although I agree the Gazebo is wasted space.
