According to the Village's published schedule, newspaper, glass, aluminum and plastic recycling for Zone 1 will take place on April 17th. So why is it that as one drives along Wyoming and intersecting streets this morning, one sees green toter after green toter, along with the usual "overflow" containers? I suspect a classic case of "monkey-see-monkey-do", probably starting with somebody who put their stuff out early so they wouldn't miss recycling day next week while out of town on business or vacation... followed by one after another of their less-than-alert neighbors who just assumed that they'd forgotten, and so hauled out the toter, etc.... Mob mentality: It doesn't only happen here on MOL... -s. |

No actually, Mr. Soda, the traditonal day for Green toter pickup has usually been the 2nd Monday of the Month. For some reason they have altered the schedule. Why, I don't know but recently the whole schedule ahs gone kabloowee. Those of us with steel trap memories KNOW that today should be pickup and therefore, have placed said toters out forthwith (where they will remain until next week) |

South Orange has to be one of few municpalities ( and quite possibly the only one) where you have to consult a calendar to see which day is recyclable day. For the taxes we pay, which are in the top 10 in the state, you would think there would be more than one recycling day per month. A large number of towns have it once a week, others perhaps every two weeks. How do these towns manage it? (No Tau comments please.) |

OK, as a public service for those of you without steel trap memories who for whatever reason just follow what your neighbors seem to be doing (lawnsigns come to mind...), or who have somehow just lost the schedule, I present the dates for Zone 1 Recycling for the rest of 2006: 4/17 5/15 6/19 7/17 8/14 9/11 10/16 11/13 12/11 You're welcome. -s. BTW: LL, if you hadn't just posted, I'll wager you could simply have pulled your stuff back from the curb & nobody woulda been the wiser ... |

This is what Westfield does. Various zones in Westfied are scheduled for bulk pick-up a couple of times a year. In order for a homeowner to have the town pick up, a homeowner must get a permit which is displayed in front of the residence. The permit costs $75. Homeowners can put out as much as they want. No limit (other than no construction materials.) The homeowners in Westfield seem to like this arrangement. |

Why don't you simply call the dpw and schedule a free pickup? |

That works too for large pieces of furniture and appliances. And if you really want to clean out, there are several individuals who probably don't charge more than that. That's if you don't want to wait for container days. ps - My impression is that as you go further south in the state, towns are more likely to have frequent bulk pick-ups. Some towns even have it once a week, others once or twice a month. This is more common where the municipality handles garbage pick-up itself. |

All one has to do is sign up on the village calendar for reminders. They will come three days prior and on the day of either by email or by text message to a cell phone. You can also get reminders for meetings and events. Here is the link to the page to register. http://www.southorange.org/Calendar/ A message is also sent if a meeting is cancelled.

Tipping[dumping]fees are 85$per ton in Essex County and 110$in Union County. That is the minimum you would pay to dump as there is no 1/2 ton or less allowances.Factor in the labor and the trucking fees and you can see why its so expensive.Unless you"re combining your stuff with someone else, theres no way you're doing that for 75$. |
