Wanting to praise when there is something praiseworthy.... At last night's meeting, Art Taylor asked a series of questions that led to a new policy of posting all "part time" village positions on the village web site, so as to increase the likelihood of village residents being hired for those positions. Terri Anne Moore and Stacey Jennings (who wasn't there) should review the tape and take lessons on how to serve a constituency well. Mr. Taylor used his position to ensure that the Village was seeking village residents affirmatively and in accordance with an existing village ordinance giving preferential treatment to SO residents. I make no comment on the appropriateness preference programs. What I think is praiseworthy and in sharp contrast to Moore Abrams and Jennings, is that Mr. Taylor used his position of authority to ensure that both the spirit and the letter of a policy were being enforced for the betterment South Orange residents. In contrast, a couple of months ago, Moore Abrams and Jennings attacked an unsuspecting private business person who wasn't even working on a village contract, but for a private developer, about his employment practices at a televised Board Meeting. Mr. Taylor's approach was fairer and far more effective. What I hope Moore Abrams and Jennings take away from this comment, if they read it, is that if you want there to be a "new South Orange" reflecting the "new" demographics, then you need to be effective agents of change. Alienating business people involved in the redevelopment of our downtown - the gross incompetency of the Township is doing a very job of that on its own, thank you - and embarassing all of us in a public meeting and on TV isn't being effective. Making sure that business opportunities are appropriately advertised, competitively bid, and that the village affirmatively markets those opportunities to minority-owned businesses so that they can compete for them, that is using your position of authority to effect change. That is being effective.

I agree that posting part time positions on the web site make sense. But is this something that we should praise a trustee for? This should have been done from the get go? Where has Art Taylor been on this issue for the last few years? And how about full time positions and I'll give you another thought - all part time and full time positions should also be listed in the Gaslight. As far as I'm concerned he's just attempting to get in the good graces with the public for his eventual run in 2007. If Calabrese doesn't run you can be sure Taylor will run for Village President. Has he not been in bed with the gang that couldn't manage straight? Where has his voice been concerning the escalating costs of the PAC? Praise for something he should have done many moons ago....I should say not. SO1969 for the most part I respect and concur with the majority of your posts but I couldn't get behind this one. |

I'm not endorsing him...I just thought he provided an example in this instance that some of his counterparts may want to follow. My critical eye will examine his overall performance as we approach elections. |
