I hear that NJ Transit has inspected and has 21 days to get back with the results!!(?)!! Meanwhile the Village Diner is stuck with all the normal fixed costs (insurance, taxes, rent etc.) day in and day out while not taking in one thin dime... You'd think they'd (NJ Transit) be a tad more responsive to the community, especially the business community. And what's the big deal with inspection anyway? It's a diner replacing a diner! It takes 21 days to...what? I just don't get it. |

This diner is like most diners a major draw for the town. It will draw crowds for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It will become a meeting place for people. It is absolutely unconscionable that it takes this long to get the inspector to give the ok to open. I am very sure that if our Calabrese or Gross made the necessary calls it would speed it up. Although they do not control this location as far as inspections go I would believe if they put pressure on NJT it would help. What we all can do is once it opens support it!! |

Where do you "hear" details like these? I'm going to guess what you heard was one side griping about the other, and you don't have the whole story. |

If I recall, it took Coldstone what seemed like months to get clearances from NJT (or county, or whoever signs off on food services on that property). They lost almost all of their first summer season, unable to open until sometime around Labor Day. Very costly for the merchants trying to go into business at that location. |

I heard.... don't know how factual...but many of the improvements installed were done without permit and required inspections. I think the state inspector is now pulling tail for the lack of compliance to stipulated procedures. |

Well, unfortunately it will take longer than he planned but I welcome the new diner! The other one was disgusting! So I will make sure that I eat there as often as I can! I looked in last week as the door was open and it looks great! I cant wait! |

I thought the Diner was doing purely cosmetic renovation and not construction and therefore didn't need construction permits? mjc, Cold Stone Creamery went through the following: NJT had to initially approve the construction plans (which took almost 2 months) submitted to them in Feb. The plans were then submitted to the State DCA (Dept of Community Affairs) dept of project review. That took another 3 months for review before permits were issued and construction could begin. Once construction started (July), the DCA perfomed the site inspections which for the most part were timely. If the Diner needed permits, then I assume they have to go through the same review process. If they did not get the necessary approvals from NJT or the DCA first, I expect it could be a long while before they open. |

If people really want Sloppy Joes back sooner than THD can provide them. You can PL me. I promise I can get them made by one of the original owners. I did this x-mas, super bowl, and a baptism. It will take some begging on my part. But, I can deliver on this. |

This ain't exactly rocket science, folks. Given the proper quality of ingredients, just about any of you MOLers out there (with care, patience, and a certain artistic anal-retentiveness) should be able to DIY, as I've been doing for lo these many months since THD went away. My personal Joes are combos of turkey, ham, & swiss with Russian & slaw on thinly-sliced seedless (or occasionally Russian) rye. The loaves I get are not the big square dealies that THD uses, but they provide slices big enough to put a serious dent in my hunger. I hope Mark &/or Matt get the opportunity to make some of you happy by creating some Sloppy Joes for you. Please take them up on their generous offer, and keep monitoring the new THD site for evidence of progress. Meanwhile, here's how it was done at the old THD...

Soda, Thank you for your detailed analysis on "Building a Joe" Town Hall Deli Style---I'm sure many MOLer's are spreading slaw and russian dressing even as I post this email. However, I must ask---how much free time do you have on your hands? While we certainly appreciate your cogent analysis of the finer points of Joe construction---including your own SJ methodologies---it does raise a basic question of why? And perhaps a larger concern about potential online addictive symptoms. In fact, I'm even questioning myself for responding to your post. Perhaps it's time we both give the internet a rest and grab a quick sandwich! |

Hmmm. How is showing you online any more a waste of time than showing you in person (except that online is quicker and can get to more people)? Sadly, the point is moot since SODA/Oracle of MOL doesn't seem to be posting anymore. |

Steve- Why are you picking on SODA? There are plenty of people who have posted many more notes in less time then SODA has. When you think about it SODA only posts about 780 notes a year. Breaks down to about 65 posts a month. Only 16 a week. For a grand total of 3 or so a day. That's not excessive, when you realy think about it. What I really want to know is did anyone go to the grand opening of the diner this morning? Please report back! |

Scully, you're only half-right. I'm still at it, but the Oracle has been called (by that "Higher Authority" you hear about in the Hebrew National commercials) up from semi-retirement in Boca to an assignment he has only described as taking him "far away". Wherever it is he's doing whatever he's doing, he says he intends to send me periodic dispatches, which I'm supposed to post immediately on my blog. Stay tuned... And do let us know what you think of the Village Diner! JTA: Thanks for the quant work, but there'll always be folks who think that any posts of mine are too many. Steve: Twelve posts and you need to step away from MOL? Either you've got a brilliant future (based upon your steely discipline and a laudible need to ask "why"), or you just need to step up and embrace your Inner Poster like the rest of us have. Either way, I hope you enjoyed your late-night sammich. -s. |

Sully- Dang! I was right there this morning about 8am after dropping someone off at the Middle School. Thought to myself "If Jamie didn't have the site down last night when I tried to post my note asking if anyone wanted to meet me there 8:15 ish" I could have met you. And as I was going around the little circle thing to head back out to South Orange Ave. I thought of you! Said to myself, "Sully works nights! I bet if I had been able to post that note last night I would have found an "I'll meet you there' post this morning! Maybe another day this week? |

Just had a very nice dinner there! My 10 year old proclaimed the decor "too fancy" compared to Manny's, however... ;-) Staff trying hard (maybe a bit too hard, they are doing a fine job!), food great (was told "today everything is fresh!"). I had the gyro -- very well prepared. We'll go back on the weekend when they have hot dogs... (10 year old settled for the spaghetti & meat ball, would have preferred hot dogs!) Chocolate cake gets the thumbs up, too. What a great addition to the village! Pete |

The thing to jump about is it is first rate diner food and it is in the center of our village. Furthermore, it is above average in appearance and, based on Manny's, it will stay that way. This is very different from a certain bagel shop that serves perfectly passable food, but is disgusting and depressing to walk into. Even some of the places that I like in SO that aren't totally disgusting are pretty well worn around the heel. It is very nice to see a good business run by folks that are willing to invest in their establishment's appearance and take pride in maintaining it. This will be a true asset to South Orange. This is indeed worthy of jumping about. p.s. Cheesecake was excellent as was chicken cordon bleu sandwich. Penne rustica was good too. I've enjoyed many a gyro at Manny's and am sure they'll be excellent at the Village Diner. p.p.s. The cake being given out may have been a cake given to Village Diner by the staff at Cold Stone Creamery (and may have run out). We were there for the gift giving. It was a great show of neighborliness. I was on a South Orange high and told myself I wouldn't kill the buzz by watching the BOT meeting when I got home...for the most part I avoided it, but did surf by and heard this new one from Calabrese "the State wants it(Tony Smith sculpture) on Sloan Street and they're paying for it." (totally wrong - State not paying for it - and idiotic even if it were true - we're going to let Trenton tell us to put a big modern sculpture on a street with historic buildings, huh?) Two ends of the spectrum in one night, the best and worst things happening on Sloan Street this year. |

I'm the last person to make excuses for Calabrese, but maybe he said the "Estate", instead of the "State"? Let's wait until the video is posted & we can review what was actually said. In any event, his return to the lies about the Grant and the "switch" came up again, which was what annoyed me. Anyway...back to the thread about the Diner....I can't wait to try it this weekend. |
