I drove through Maplewood in envy last night as I saw everyone's piles of junk out on their lawns. No loading all that crap into their cars and making several trips to "container" day, waiting in line, only to be told that you can't actually throw out whatever it is you have. South Orange is the only town I know of that makes it so difficult to get rid of stuff. I would be happy to pay a little extra to participate in a once a year bulk pick up. It is just so frustrating. Last night I briefly considered carrying my stuff over the town line and leaving it in front of a house. |

It is something most of us miss. The best part was that people would come by and pick up your trash... their treasure. |

It's true recycling and should be encouraged. One man's (or woman's) trash is another's treasure. Even if the rule was whatever wasn't taken was brought back in, it would be worthwhile. |

With so much talk of the town going "green", wouldn't it be nice to have a recycling day that was really recyling. Of course, people could only put out things that others might be able to use, and the "pickers" would have to promise not to make a mess, but I can see this an an extendsion of free-cycle, only in real time. I'm not the one to organize it, but I think it would bring "great" publicity to our fair village. |

Actually, Millburn does not have a bulk pick up either. However, we can bring most anything to the dump (except construction materials). I remember 22 years ago when I first moved in they had one bulk pick up. Now nothing. I also envy Maplewoodians for that luxury. |

Here in West Orange, we've got a WEEKLY bulk pick up. Pretty much anything goes... except maybe construction debris. |

I know of a town in another state that has a place set aside for residents to bring whatever they want to dispose of that still might have use to someone. You can only bring on Saturday and Sunday. The place is staffed by volunteers. Anyone can come on those two days and take whatever they want. It winds up saving the town $80,000/yr in disposal costs. Some place down by the DPW site would be the logical place, but the town has to want to do it, establish a locale for it, and put in place a volunteer staffing program. Of course, the DPW place itself looks like a dump, which despite the fact that the place is a place to dump, doesn't have to look like one, if you get my point. |
