M.B. I hope that your message is in a sarcastic vein! I was raised in SO and still live here, at 60 years of age (now) I have seen many and vast projects undertaken in THE VILLAGE. NEVER has the town done SO much visible damage then in the last few years of revitilizing this VILLAGE! It is positively sickening! The gestapo tactics and underhanded dealings have slowed progress to a crawl, it has done the town NO good to slow the traffic down "to promote better visiblity" other than to show the local drivers the discusting presence that is now VERY visible!! thanks for listening!! RANT only just begun!! |

Just take a close look at how the siding is coming off the face of ShopRite. This is a hazardous condition.

The plywood has been missing from two or three windows for a very long time now, leaving gaping holes. It seems this should be a code violation. If not a code violation, at least cover the holes back up with plywood. It's disgusting and ugly. |

They should tear down the whole building. Its a mess and a disgrace. I see no redeeming value in it being rehabilitated, if it is ever to happen. The one that should have been restored was the flat iron builing which they did tear down. If the truth be told, there should have been a comprehensive plan put together aournd the total downtown, as they did in Livingston Center, and then use the powers of government to make it happen. This piecemeal approach is going to look just that. I fear a real hodgepodge. The one choesive element is the chain link fence all around the downtown. Our own version of the Christo gates. |

I went to the S.O. library today and for the first time, got a bird's eye view of that big, open, nasty space which used to be the liquor stores, et. al. I told my husband that if we did not live in S.O. and were looking to buy, we would have chosen Montclair instead. This place looks like a ghetto sometimes. What the hell? Do our taxes and median range income dictate such travesty? And what really gets me is that Calabrese, Taylor, and the rest of the Bad News Bears, all live in S.O.! They act as though they don't see the "Coming Soon" signs and nothing occurs, or empty lots of land or boarded up store fronts. WHAT THE HELL?! |

Look at the video of Monday's BOT meeting. You'll see that the Board could care less about the Saiyd properties. You'd think they did not have condemnation powers. How long are we supposed to look at that site? And Beifus...they are content to let him do his thing at whatever pace he chooses to do it. What's the point of having a developer's agreement if no one chooses to enforce it? Calabrese excused Beifus because they found things (water) in construction that they had not banked on. Excuse me, they are next to the river. Duh! 4 years to discover this. |

As I understand it, Beifus owns a now boarded up (or papered up) property on Valley next to the now defunct Gulf station that he also owns. There's something terribly wrong with the management of this Village and something extremely wrong with Calabrese for not giving a sh*t about what this place looks like! Between the taxes and the incompetence, what does the Village hold for us? Mr. Beifus seems to do a-okay here -- CHA-CHING! |

Maybe we should get one of those giant, blow-up rats that the unions use in NYC and picket in front Mr. Beifus' Mercedes dealership...or perhaps his home since he clearly doesn't give a crap about what he's doing to our town.

peteglider, you said it, man! Beifus & Sayid are NOT developers! How loudly can we make that clear to Calabrese, et.al? Let the professionals come in, and not for PILOT, and have them turn this place into a show room. Our old B'klyn neighborhood held more charm than S.O. -- and we lived in E. Flatbush! Go figure! |

I see that someone pulled off the hazardous siding from the front of the Old ShopRite - Thanks. Also, it was impression that the new ordinance for fencing off construction sites required screening. What is up with the Vose pit? |

While the "Vose pit" looks cleaner than the "Beifus pit" ever did, we seem to have the same problem that the construction fence on Vose is now completely blocking the sidewalk.

Last night we learned the latest excuse for delays at the Shop Rite site - not only does the Village STILL not control all properties that have been in "negotiation" since October 2005, NJ Transit supposedly has a new requirement for something that must now be submitted for design AND we are also waiting for a "No Further Action" letter from DEP on the site. Can someone say "Coming Soon"? |

I think Verizon and all the underground wires have been redirected...??? ... are they willing now to tell us the truth, do they want to free themselves from the lies that has enveloped them for so many years..... I doubt it! The leadership still reeks of sewer gas and petroleum by products.... what's new with Beifus - any updates? |

There were no development updates at the BOT meeting last night because the VP was not present and he would have provided them. Given how important they are, another trustee should have reported on them in his absence. |

Please I work for a company that builds homes. Please I understand that it is taking a very long time to get the new market built. Please there are a lot of things that have to be done before you can build on any lot. You need to have the place inspected to make sure there is nothing harmful in the lot like old chemicals and poisons. You also have to make sure that land is capable of handling the building size you want to build. I do not think you would want the building sinking into the ground? These are just some of the things that need to be done before you can build on a lot. The lot has to be safe or you can't build on it. Please It takes time for all the necessary safety inspections to be done. Once they are done and the lot is declared safe then you can build on it. After the building is built it then must be inspected to make sure everything meats all the safety code before anyone can use it. Please be patient and we will get the kind of market we want here in South Orange. |

Debra- My brother is a builder. It doesn't take this long to build something. This has been going on for at least eight years. I might agree with you if it was only one site with problems. But there are at least a half dozen. Enough already. |

It didn't take this long to build the Roman Colosseum. And Debra PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, use the word please again...we didn't see it enough. I'm happy to see that there are so many other people who realize how screwed up this town is. Sayid is not a developer. Beifus is not a developer. Shop-Rite should've been done 1 year after it closed. The parking lot behind Shop-Rite should be a parking lot, not a development. The SOPAC should be a parking lot for Bunny's. The "River Walk" should not even be considered. (THERE'S NO F***ING RIVER) The half-a-million dollar sculpture should be dropped on the head of the person that even thought it would be a good idea......And So On! I've said it before....Stop trying to make South Orange a nice place to visit and start making South Orange a nice place to live. Think about the residents FIRST! Keep in mind (whoever likes to show my posts to the Big People) this is only MY OPINION!!!!! |

saw something very funny (and sad at the same time) yesterday...a woman driving her car down Vose going towards SOAve decided that the two pedestrians forced to walk in the street along the parked cars in front of the pit that used to be shop rite were a nuisance to her. She proceeds to lay on the horn at them as she slowly drives by them and stares. (they were single file and as close to the cars as they could get without being impaled by the side mirrors-from what i could see from across the street). the one pedestrian proceeded to give the woman the finger! the woman in the car gives the finger back (with her child in the back seat). it really was a funny sight...but in a sad sort of way that this is what our town has been reduced to. horn honking and finger giving just for taking a stroll down vose avenue. i think if drivers have an issue like this woman does with the people forced to walk in the street they need to take it up with the BOT. don't take it out on the pedestrians...where would you like them to go???? |

I agree it should not take 5 years to get thing built here in south Orange. What we do not know about is what they found in these sites especial The Buffis site. It was a car dealer ship. Now I do not know if they did any car reapers on the site? If they did who knows what kind of chemicals they found in the ground there that may have leaked out of cars. I also do not know how long it takes to clean up environmental things. The other things is I think South Orange government could not make up there mines on what they wanted to do with the sites and who was going to get the contract to do the building. I wish South Orange did not drag it's feet on redevelopment. I think they should have held an open town meeting and asked us the residents of South Orange what we want and need here. I really wish they would get things moving. Enough is enough. |

Debra, the state Department of Environmental Protection came out and said there was no hazardous material on site. This should have been done years ago. It is not up to SO to determine who gets to develop this site (Beifus). It is privately owned, and they (the BOT) have shown no interest (other than Mark Rosner) to consider taking the property and giving it to another developer. |
