Janine Bauer of the SO Planning Board wrote a very interesting article for the newsletter of the NJ Chapter of the American Planning Association about planning/redevelopment in South Orange . . .

The link is: http://www.njapa.org/newsletter/2006mar_apr.pdf

You have to go to page 4 of the PDF document (i.e. the newletter) to read the article. Although it is the March/April issue, I just got it today.

So what are we to make of this? She sits on the planning board. She talks of a process that I have yet to see the village follow vis-a-vis competitive proposals for development. Should we have a master plan? Yes. Do we follow one? Doesn't look like it to me. She voted at the last Beifus hearing of the Planning Board to give them yet another approval. If she really believes what she writes, why is she not driving home the point on the board on which she sits - right alongside Mr. C. So is this. do as I say, but not as I do? I'm confused.

Janine has been quite an asset to S.O. and she works very hard. I don't feel she's anyone's puppet and has done her best to move things along to the best of her ability.

She published the same article in the News-Record a couple of months ago. Did she violate the Record's copyright? Oh no, she wouldn't do that, she is an attorney, she knows better.

Article, or Op-Ed? Why would you assume she has done something wrong?

MHD, yes, a shorter version, because I changed e-mail address. Wow I am impressed, you are very observant.

Rastro, I don't assume, I just wonder, hoping that she didn't do anything wrong.

But the fact that you question it, and your obviously sarcastic tone, imply that you think she might have done something wrong.

The only person who has impressed me on the Planning Board is Skrobe. He is a voice in the wilderness. He presented evidence that Beifus lied to the Board. Yet Bauer et al didn't do a thing. I'm tired of people who talk a good game but then don't stand up for what they believe. I'd like to be proven wrong.

As for moving things along, what exactly has she done? Maybe she should have withheld approval from Beifus' latest pitch. And then pushed for competitive proposals for the site with any influence she may have with the BOT's. But she went along with the crowd, and Skrobe was left to hang by himself, being the solo "no" vote.

Rastro,

Let me rephrase it:

Is it against the copyright laws to have an article or op-ed published in two different publications?

If so Ms Bauer has done something wrong, if not she is clean.

Mary

Authors reserve rights to their stories unless it's spelled out in a contract that they have given them up.

I agree with jayjay about Skrobe on the planning board. His actions were laudatory in their own right and stellar in comparison with what everyone else should have done and failed to do. It is disappointing that the town doesn't have more people with his integrity serving it. If anyone has doubt about this, they need to view the last planning board meeting. Incredible. Skrobe caught the construction manager for Beifus in perjury and still the planning board didn't kick out his paymaster. A breathtaking display of bad judgement on the part of the board. Skrobe put them all to shame. Thank God he's there.

Why can't Skrobe head the planning board? He is the natural leader of them. How is it decided who heads it, who gets onto it? Anyone? It would go a long way to improving things in town if he were the head and could help find other members with his own integrity.
