Can someone tell me who is responsible for code enforcement in this town? There was the man at the town meeting who complained that he was living next to a frat house whose residents repeatedly engaged in noisy and raucous behavior. Matthews said the fines for such things are $2,200 for the landlord, yet no one seemed able to say if such fines were ever levied. Meanwhile, this poor guy has to put up with this, and pay the taxes he does to live here. So, who levies the fines? And there are other instances too. How about property owners who violate upkeep ordinaces? We've seen plenty of those violations. I would bet that Village Hall itself is in violation.

If the village doesn't enforce the ordinances against noisy frat houses, maybe the man could call a municipal judge and see if he has any options of reporting it himself. Don't really know; just guessing. |

How about bring the Village Trustees, Village Administrator, Village Attorney, Village Judges, and Code Officials out on a Thursday night from 11pm till 4am while SHU is in session...I'll provide the coffee and let them see what happens on certain streets around specific houses.

I find Code Enforcement wanting. There is an inspector out on disability every other month and they do not monitor residential property. Peeling paint, frat parties, garbage, tall grass, etc, etc. When someone takes care of his property, it's frustrating when another neighbor won't. It creates an uncomfortable scenario: You say something to a neighbor, you're damned, you don't say anything, you're damned. It's a shame really. We spend alot in taxes, but can't get the services we need. |

The college has been a problem for years...I think the town leaders are not thinking outside the box, or looking to other college towns for advice or examples. Fraternity houses have been in town since I can remember, I think its a don't bother, just keep yessing the complainers policy thats in effect. The shore towns can aggressively attack quaility of life and be successful, why can't South Orange. On a side note, it wont be an issue until September...and then we will start all over again. |
