The curbs in the village are a total mess. I have asked on several occassions who is responsible for curbs in the town. I am told by town officials on some occassions that it is the home owner. However, I have seen the Village replace curbs on streets like Vose and Ridgewood. I have called village hall to find out if there is a schedule for re-doing curbs and they say they have a plan, but no one is able to say when and what streets. (That's a plan?) I have asked about standards - are there any? I am told that the village wants all curbs to be Belgian block. Homeowners don't seem to know that. When home owners do replace their curbs, they replace them with whatever they seem to want or whatever the mason contractor feels he wants to do. So we have this hodgepodge of curbs. It makes the streets look lousy. So, does anyone know the real story? Who is responsible for setting standards, replacing the curbs, enforcing any standard, etc.? |

I am with you on asking this question. Our street is horrendous. The snowploughs etc have done a real job on it along with the neglect over the years. They did almost half of it last year and just left the rest. I asked at the Village Hall when it was all being done and was told 3 weeks ago, that "They have a plan" and the streets off of/nearest South Orange Avenue "up where you are" are going to be done soon. I asked what the "Soon" was, as they had been getting worse and worse for years, and she said April/May-ish... Like an idiot I didn't ask which year. |

Be careful about what you ask-- The homeowner is responsible for the curb, as well as the sidewalk. The only time the town covers the tab is if the town did the damage and it is promptly reported, or if a major street repaving including curb replacement takes place. |

This is another prime example of where the town provided a giveaway for a developer, instead of using it as an opportunity for existing residents. The town agreed to SUBSIDIZE the Pulte development of the quarry with $1.2 million. In exchange, you would have thought Pulte would have easily agreed to redo the curbs along Harding Drive & Tillou Rd to "compensate" the residents for 3 years of heavy truck traffic. Instead the Village bent over and let the developer stick it to the residents, while walking away with $1.2 million of our tax dollars. |

I thought the same thing. It very dangerous coming down Tillou right now. So many people walk down Tillou to the train station and many kids going to the middle school. All of them in the street. There are no sidewalks. With the current truck traffic, and the future traffic from Pulte. Someone is going to get hurt. Pulte should really foot the bill for it. |

In order to get Belgian blocks on a street, the entire street has to repaved. Otherwise, it's up to the property owner, as crazy as that is. |

I too think it's bizarre there is no sidewalk on Tillou between Mayhew and Wyoming. That's on the way to a crosswalk, which makes them even more necessary since the crosswalk dictates which street you walk from! Walking to the train has become an obstacle course with big trucks and cars swerving around. I'm always thankful when I cross Wyoming and get to an actual sidewalk... Mr Rosner -- Is there any way to get the town to put sidewalks in that location? |

newtoallthis: I know this was discussed a couple of years ago, but will bring it up again. I know there are other streets where there are no sidewalks and not sure of all the history of some of those streets.

If you create sidewalks where they don't exist, wouldn't you either have to take people's property or pay them for it? |

I believe there is a 10' easement (or some other municipal term) from the curb on everyone's property. So even though everyone "owns" the land all the way to the curb (and I believe that is why the town can require that you shovel your sidewalks), the town can do "stuff" with that land. And they can prevent you from doing things with it as well. For example, I don't think you can build a fence or a wall within that easement. |

Your sidewalk and curb budget has generously been transferred to the Tony Smith sculpture. It has a higher priority. |

In the previous towns I've owned property in -- the town is responsible for the curbs and sidewalks. But those have been more newly built developments, rather then 75+ year old homes. And lack of sidewalks? How idiotic is it that a busy street like Wyoming doesn't have sidewalks on both sides? (I think its even worse in Maplewood, think of the streets where kids walk to school!) Obviously poor planning and foresight existed even many years ago among the town "leaders." /p

Adding sidewalks on Tillou between Mayhew and Wyoming wouldn't infringe on property owners. Currently there's a sort of brick gutter running alongside the street on both sides, sized like a narrow version of a sidewalk. Unfortunately, it's level with the street and very uneven, so you're in the street when you walk there. |

Don't get me started on sidewalks. Apparently, there was a recent story about this (lack of sidewalks) in the NYtimes? Anyone read it and have a link to it? This is one of my pet causes. |
