Move to West Orange, we have bulk pickups every week!! :-)

This little fact has helped me ease the transition from Maplewood. So far I got rid of a sectional sofa, two old ceiling fans, some really old and really ugly sliding closet doors with mirrors (one broken) and to many small items to mention.

I know Bob..,,, Isn't it great! ?!? Last night I saw several large SUV type vehicles, cruising down my street... stopping at the homes with large piles of bulk trash in front... I think they were almost racing, to see who got to a house first!

Don't be envious of Maplewood. Bulk is only once a year. You'd better not have anything planned that evening or else you're stuck holding on to your stuff for another year. Plus all the people roaming the streets looking for stuff, wandering from house to house. Unnerving

Not so unnerving.. a little messy perhaps, but not unnerving. South Orange used to have bulk pick up twice a year, then once and, for years, not at all. Seems it was too costly.

You can make an appointment for bulk pickup in South Orange. Usually you have to wait a few days--or weeks, but you can get bulk pickup. I got rid of a couple of pieces that way a few months ago. Check the SO website, or call village hall for information. I'm sorry I don't remember exactly whom to call.

I know that they'll come pick up a couple of things. The thing I loved about "clean-up day" was that all my stuff got recycled to a new home. Things I no longer wanted/needed didn't go into a "container" - they went to someone who needed them.

We loved "garbage pickin'" trips when my kids were young - we'd always find some skates in the next size we needed and we'd put out the outgrown ones.

They will pick up 6 things and you have to say what those 6 things will be when you schedule the pickup with them, and then it is usually about 6-8 weeks out before they actually come get the stuff.

There are good and bad points to each system. If you have a mass bulk pick-up day twice a year and you happen to be out of town or something on that day, you're out of luck.

The part I despise is the stupid days where you're supposed to haul your crap down yourself to the yard and sit in a line half the day to unload it.

That said, if you have something of even marginal value and you stick it out on the curb any Saturday by 11 AM you can be pretty certain it will be gone by 4, assuming you don't live on a cul-de-sac.

When I first moved to South Orange we had junk week. I do not understand why junk week was stopped. That was the one time of the year we could put out all our bulk items free of charge. There are a lot of people here in South Orange that do not drive. Now we must bring our bulk items to the place on Walton AVE or we must pay to have to them picked up. I have family that live in West Orange and they can put out bulk items every week free of charge. I do not understand why we cannot do the same here in South Orange?

Is there anyway to get bulk pick up reinstated in South Orange. Even once a year?
