Last night's BOT meeting has established some new rules for hanging banners in the village business district. The discussion was the result of "The Avenue" banners. New Rules: 1. You can hang a banner as long as it is part of a fence. Then you call the banner a fence. You can then hang a fence on another structure, i.e. as on the Shop Rite building. 2. All banners must reflect the "new demographic". If they don't, you have to take it down even if its a fence. 3. The current code about banners does not matter if the banner is a fence and reflects the new demographic. 4. The project the banner advertises is not important and not worthy of discussion. Only the banner is worth discussing, and only if it does not reflect the new demographic. |

Can someone give an example of a banner that "reflects the new demographic?" I'm old and need help with my poor understanding. |

Perhaps that is a banner that has yet to remain up for 5 years and become old and faded. It is "new" and shiny and pretty. |

I think that not only are these banners illegal and not politically correct but they are a traffic hazard. When I drove by and read this one I was laughing so hard I almost crashed into Dunkin Donuts.

Context is everything. Lizziecat, in case you didn't get to see my first censored banner, offered to you as an example of what you won't be seeing on The Avenue, it was Pizzaz' good old illegal "home of the upscale pizza crowd" banner (taken down, BTW, only after MOL pressure), with that big red "new" added, and, as MHD has so helpfully pointed out, a nice round portrait of Aunt Jemima. The second version featured an attractive shot of Terrianne from the Village website. It, too, was erased. Personally, I only wished to help ease your confusion about "the new demographic". If you need further definitions, I'm sure that Dave/Jamie will happily explain it in terms that won't offend anybody. -s. BTW, Dan: I agree about the "Avenue" banners, and think we can do without 'em altogether... |

The new demographic is people who think that cash businesses open at 3am and attracting Newark gang members and associated business practices is something worth ignoring while at the same time tearing down local, law-abiding business owners with selective enforcement of ordinances. Hope that helps. |

Lizziecat: A lot of the right people? Well, then, I'm sorry. I guess if you were offended, you missed the point. Maybe you should go with Dave's explanation, and forget all about whatever you think I was trying to say. But do you understand the New Demo any better now? If so, my work here's done. -s. |
